Oneonta Awards

August 3, 2014

Two of Hartwick’s closest and most devoted friends - Robert and Joan Moyer - were recognized on May 7, 1999 as the College dedicated the pool in honor of them and their family.

Members of the College and greater Oneonta community gathered poolside with the Moyers for the celebration. Bob Moyer was a member of the Hartwick Board of Trustees from 1977-86 and again from 1989-98. He was elected chair of the board in 1989, a position he held until 1996. As a board member, he chaired the finance committee and served on three other committees.

At Hartwick’s commencement in 1998, Moyer received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree for his many years of service to the College. Joan Moyer was the 1989 recipient of the College’s Citizens Board Outstanding Citizens Award.

For swimming, Moyer Pool is an eight-lane, 25-yard facility. The eastern wall of the facility is constructed of glass from floor to ceiling, providing an impressive view of the Susquehanna River Valley and the Hartwick campus. There is seating for 500 fans on the west wall of the facility.

Throughout her time in Oneonta she received the Oneonta Teachers’ Association Friend of Education Award (1973), the Hartwick College Citizen of the Year Award(1989), the SUCO Distinguished Citizen Award (1998), and the Executive Service Corps Leadership Award. Most recently she and Bob were named Mr. and Mrs. Oneonta by the Future for Oneonta Foundation (2010).

As a couple, the Moyers have endowed scholarships for Oneonta graduates at SUCO, Hartwick, and St. Rose. Hartwick named the Moyer Family Pool in honor of the couple’s extensive community involvement.  The family’s three children swam competitively during their years in Oneonta.

Early Years

August 2, 2014

Born February 14th, 1934,the daughter of Thomas and Mary Fallon of West Stockbridge, Joan grew up and graduated from Stockbridge High School in 1951.  She went on to the College of St Rose in Albany,  NY, where she was class president and graduated in 1955.

Her father, my Grandpa Fallon, owned a wonderful small butcher shop and then added groceries and beverages. The shop still exists as the West Stockbridge Public Market on the main street. They surved the immediate community and the summer Tanglewood visitors.  Their small house is still visible as you cross to get on Massachusets Turnpike.  There were apple trees, a vegetable garden and chickens.

Grandma Fallon, Joan mother, had been a school teacher, then raised a family of three boys and Joan while her husband ran the market 7 days a week. Joan was the pride of her life.  She loved music, theater, reading and more.  She was part of a large family with many sisters who all got together in West Stockbridge at her home to spend time with the Fallon kids.

The three boys went to Notre Dame and Joan went to St. Rose. There were no scholarships available at the time so this was an incredible feat for a hard working family.

Upon graduation, Joan moved to Long Island where she worked as a social worker before returning to the Capital District and becoming a high school English teacher, earning her Masters in Teaching from Albany State in 1961. She got into skiing during her time there and spent weekends going skiing.

She sailed to Europe the summer of 1960 on the Isle de France with her close friend Nancy Bremer They traveled through Europe on a rail pass.

Bob and she had just become engaged and though he helped them plan their trip (driving through some of his favorite areas in Southern france) they ended up not renting a car.
