His Life

Mr. Henderson was born Friday, November 19, 1920, in Lee County, Alabama, oldest of the six children born to Mattie Hodnett Henderson and Adolfus Henderson. He was married to his beloved wife, Evelyn Cherry Henderson, for 72 years. After completing his education and serving in the US Army during World War II, he worked for 43 years in the textile industry with Wehadkee Yarn Mills, serving on the Board of Directors and on the Board of Directors of the Wehadkee Foundation, retiring from his position as Treasurer of Wehadkee Yarn Mills in 1989. Mr. Henderson served for 21 years as councilman in the city of West Point where he chaired the City Finance Committee and was known for his ability to “balance the budget”.

He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of West Point for most of his adult life, serving on the Administrative Board and as Chairman of the Finance Committee. He always enjoyed his Wesley Men’s Sunday School class which he attended faithfully until moving to Vernon Woods in LaGrange. Mr. Henderson also served on the Board of Trustees of the Chattahoochee Valley Educational Foundation for Springwood School and on the Board of Bradshaw Library. He loved spending time with his family and was an avid fisherman, reader and gardener. His love of camellias and azaleas was common knowledge among his friends and family.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his son, John Henderson, Jr. of Roswell and by three sisters, Doris Henderson Glover, Mildred Henderson Cummings and infant child, Dorothy Henderson.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Cherry Henderson, two daughters and their spouses: Lea Rawlinson (J.M.) of LaGrange and Laura O’Rourke (Bill) of Kennesaw, John, Jr’s widow, Marlene Henderson of Roswell; six grandchildren: Elizabeth Chrane (Rob), Susan White, Devon DeVigne (Paul), Erin Hudson (Keith), Katie O’Rourke and Will O’Rourke; three great-grandchildren, Landon, Ansley and Chase DeVigne; a sister, Mary Nell Robertson(Gene)of Valley, Alabama, and a brother: Louis Henderson (Pat) of Jonesboro, Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephews.
