His Life

An overview...

April 15, 2013

John was born on June 2, 1966 in Rochester N.Y.  He moved with his family to Grosse Pointe and graduated from Grosse Pointe South in 1984.  He earned a degree in business from Western Michigan University in 1988. His friendly disposition and strong work ethic led John to a career in sales.  Many said he could sell sand to the Arabs and ice to the Eskimos.

Faith, family and friends were the cornerstones to his life. John was a committed father and deeply loved his son, Dominic.  He reveled in seeing Dominic participate in sports and together they enjoyed Tiger games, outdoor activities and exploring the area.

John will be remembered for his infectious laugh, self-deprecating humor and desire to serve others.  His band of friends became his extended family and they supported each other throughout their lives.  There are countless stories of John’s adventures in home repair, at sporting events, and on hunting expeditions up north. He was the king of appetizers and cream puffs and had an undying love for his Mom's lasagna.

John loved the outdoors and enjoyed time spent at his family’s summer home on Sebec Lake in Maine. John was the locus of fun and always surrounded by kids.  He loved canoeing, hiking, bonfires and enjoying great discussions with family over happy hour.

John’s strong faith in God inspired him to serve others in need.  He volunteered at family shelters in Detroit and at the Mission of Hope in Haiti with Kensington Church.  John was always willing to help.

John Coluni will be dearly missed by his son Dominic; parents, Val and Ginny Coluni; sisters Bobbi Coluni and Maribeth Coluni; brother-in-laws Rick Witten and Charles ‘Herbie’ Hypes; nieces Sabriah Coluni and Eliana Witten; nephew Omar Hypes and all his beloved family and friends.

All those that met John spoke of his passion and energy, fun-loving spirit and  generosity. John will live on in our hearts.
