Happy Birthday Joe. Hard to believe that just one year from tomorrow we were all at Russ' house in Del Rey for our annual Super Bowl party.
Well, this year there is no party...In a way it probably is a good thing because it just wouldn't have been the same without you there. I have thought of you often since your passing Joe....so many fond memories for sure.

After 45-50 years of friendship it is hard to express how many ways I miss you Joe. The great times and friends we shared gave me memories that I will cherish always. You have left a void in my life as I am sure you have with many others.

How I wish I could hear: " Teresa Jean, It's your brother Joe" I took all those phone calls for granted at times, thinking you'd be here forever. I love and miss you and pray you are in the angel's arms. Sis

Joe was one of the nicest men we knew. He always made a person feel special when having a conversation with him. And it was always quite a conversation! We will miss him very much and we know that he and Foot will be together doing what they do best, having a good time.

Bobbi told me of Joe's passing, I was shocked. I just saw him last Sept. at their 50th re-union & beach party. When we were young, Joe was always ready with a joke. We spent over an hour at the re-union talking about old times. Peace be with you.

I have great memories of Joe from Steele School. Being tall, we were always in the last row when they took the class picture. It was great to see him at the BHS Reunions. You will be missed Joe.

My Brother Joe

July 7, 2011

Joe Hurney

My brother Joe lived life to the fullest. He lived for today and figured tomorrow would take care of itself. He had a passion for life and all it had to offer. He had a great sense of humor (gift from Pop). Joe had so many friends, and make no mistake, they were so important to him. It was a very rare conversation that he did not include a Russ story, a Billy Underwood story or something about Foot, Mike or one the names of too numerous to mention.
Joe could converse about anything, he was very intelligent. Politics, books, authors movies TV, especially Charlie Rose and his guests. He loved horse races, Saratoga, Del Ray Beach, Key West, Maine and of course Baldwin.
He cared, he had strong opinions, we know that.. Joe and I shared many childhood memories that only we had. We were close in age, yes I am older, and so often reminisced about 22nd Street and 3rd Avenue, Epiphany School, Epiphany church, and the infamous Sisters of Charity that taught us,. Ice skating in Central Park, playing in Gramercy Park, the 28st Street Movie Theatre we went to every Saturday for a quarter. I loved recalling that he was “MacNamara leader of the band” chosen out of his entire class for the lead. He loved Westerns, he loved his Irish heritage, he loved golf, he loved to read. He loved being a Hurney!
He was proud of being a successful entrepreneur for several years  But most of all he loved his children.
In the past four weeks, which I am so grateful to God for, he would ask me when we were alone to watch out for his kids. He didn’t want to leave them or his grandchildren, but his body wore out. He had no strength but he was surrounded by love and support these last days. His brother Michael, Teresa (who sang for him), Roy and myself, Mary daily by phone, dear Ginger, a cherished visit from Russ and most importantly his precious Jennifer, Joseph, Denise and Flo, the mother of his children. Those that couldn’t be there kept in touch by phone. I lost count of the calls to our home asking about him – nonstop (just ask Roy). Joe was loved. He will be sorely missed Rest in Peace MacNamara.. You are in Gods hands now dear brother and we love you and will miss you always.

A message to Joe's nephew Steven

June 21, 2011
Hi Steven,

You don't know me but I was a good friend of your uncle Joe.  I went to Baldwin High with him where I graduated in 59. In high school, even though i knew Joe, I really did not hang with him that much. But many years later, I got to know him very well.  I am the guy who used to own the house on the pond in East Islip where Ginger Cocoman and her daughter Tracy and family now live.  It was Ginger who asked me to look on line to see if there was a memorial page for Joe and sure enough, there was.  As you probably know, Ginger was very close to Joe and is very "blue" since his passing.  'm sure you know that Ginger and your uncle were very close friends.  Well, I really will miss Uncle Joe so much because he always would help me out when it was time to go to the Super Bowl party at Russ Maklins house in Del Rey Fla.  Joe knew I didn't have a car and always worked something out so that I could get a ride to the keys and then to the Super Bowl party.  I really loved your uncle so much and am going to miss talking with him terribly.  I want to thank you for setting up this memorial page for your Uncle Joe and I will pass on the website to all of his friends as soon as I am finished writing this to you.  Please try and only think only wonderful thoughts about Joe...he was the most amazing, wonderful, caring person who always brought a smile to my face.  I will truly miss him.  I hope to meet you some day but in the meantime, remember your uncle as everyone who has ever met him does....as one of the nicest, most sincere people I have ever met.  Take care and God Bless.

Paul Orofino
