Michael (no middle name) -- 1953,
    Joseph Anthony -- 1955,
Mark Robert (middle named after Barb's brother) -- 1956,

Marriage . . .

August 11, 2014

Joe met Barbara Anne Collier (from Ambler, PA) when he coached a women's softball team that she was on, when they both worked at the Naval Air Development Center in Johnsville, Pennsylvania. That's where the Navy performed centrifuge G-force testing on astronauts and monkeys before sending them up in space. They went on dates to New York City to see broadway plays and concerts. He made her play 3rd base on the softball team, because that is what his position in college.

The couple married in 1951 or 1952.  Ernie Fox was Joe's best man.

His younger brother Pat married Barbara's younger sister June, so the resulting children from both marriages have identical relatives on both sides.  They are more like brothers and sisters to each other than cousins (bro-sins and sis-ins).

Army Days

August 11, 2014

Joe was drafted and served in the United States Army at the end of World War II with cleanup efforts in Germany.  He got in trouble with three other guys for taking a tank out on patrol after having been "asked" by their superior not to go out.  And then ... they got the tank stuck and had to be hauled out of the mud by other heavy equipment.  :-)

School Days

August 11, 2014

Young Joe went to New Sheffield School for elementary school, and graduated from Aliquippa High School (the same H.S. as famous pro football hall-of-famer Tony Dorsett).

He graduated from University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.  Joe played 3rd base on the Pitt varsity baseball team.

Birth Family

August 7, 2014

Born to Joseph James Ross, Sr. (1900 to 1984) and Michelina (Nellie) Stala (1906 to 2003).

He was the oldest child and oldest son of an oldest son of an Italian family that came in 1900 from the Naples area of Italy (probably named Diarosa or Iaderosa, meaning "of the red" because of the red highlights in their black southern-Italian hair), which many of the present-day Rosses still have. The name was changed/anglicized at Ellis Island when they immigrated to the United States.

He had three younger brothers, all still living:  Pasquale (Pat) Ross (lives in Aliquippa, PA), Dominic Ross (lives in Charlotte, NC), and John Ross (lives in Aliquippa, PA).

They lost a baby sister (next to oldest child) at her birth when they lived in a big, drafty farmhouse on the family farm in a bitter, cold winter.

We are imagining his beautiful reunion in heaven with his mom, dad and younger sister, and his wife of 25 years, Barbara (Collier) Ross, who passed to the other side in 2009.
