Her Life

About JuiYing Lin

April 24, 2011

Jui Ying Lin was my grandmother. A woman of great character, strong yet compassionate and loyal. With her husband, she raised 4 children while fleeing to Taiwan from China during the revolution years and subsequent take over by the communists.

I often heard stories by my mother, her eldest daughter of the struggles they faced growing up with a large family during those years. While her children may remember her as a strict, she raised them to be resourceful, hard working, educated and successful. Her legacy lives on in each of them, with abundance of grandchildren and great grandchildren as well.

As a grandmother, she was always generous, kind and jovial. A devoted buddhist, her compassion was clearly evident, her laughter was contagious and sense of humor contagious.

In 1993, while I worked in Taiwan during my thesis year in college, she took great care of me and made sure that I felt at home. She was always supportive and encouraging. We also had some great conversations that were candid and intimate, reflecting upon her life that I never expected. I treasure the time that I had with her in this way not as grandparent/grandchild, but as good friends as well.

In her later years, I was thankful that she moved to the US. so that we could see her more often and that she had a chance to meet and know her great-grandchildren.
