Her Life
May 3, 2011

Dr. Baker was affiliated with Women and Infants Hospital at Brown University but was poised to return to Buffalo in June as a physician-researcher focused on women’s reproductive and mental health issues.

She was born and raised in Buffalo. She earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, as well as a bachelor’s in nursing, in 1997; a master’s in epidemiology in 2000; and an MD/PhD in 2007, all from the University at Buffalo.

During her training, she achieved a remarkable record of scholarly work, teaching and mentoring. She received more than a dozen honorary awards for her clinical and scientific work, and she authored more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

She was a mentor to a range of trainees, including high school, college, graduate, medical students and medical residents.

Dr. Baker earned a reputation for her passion for science, sharp and curious mind, and unrelenting devotion to her patients. One colleague described her as having the perfect combination of the heart and soul of a nurse with the expertise of a doctor.

Dr. Baker took greatest pride in her relationships with family and friends and her service to others. She was a caring, loving, and dedicated foster mother for many years. She devoted countless hours doing community service at numerous sites.

Survivors include her partner of 12 years, Barbara J. Burns; her parents, Robert L. and Linda Baker; and two sisters, Cheryl Wickham and Laura Jepson.
