His Life

Life is a Journey

June 28, 2015

Kevin was born 1956 in North Las Vegas, while his parents were stationed at the Nellis Air Force Base. He was raised in Vancouver, Washington with his bothers Dan and Pat. Throughout high school he excelled in football, hoping one day to play in college. He also loved the military and growing up in a military family made a great impression on him.

After high school he joined the Air Force and became a Military Police Officer. During his time in the military, he was stationed in numerous countries overseas including the United Kingdom and the Philippines. This is when he met a fellow Security Police Officer who would become his wife. Cheryl was a wild child from San Diego and they quickly fell in love and got married in England. They were married for a second time in San Diego, in a beautiful backyard ceremony in 1980. Kevin and Cheryl travelled, served their country and lived life to the fullest. Education was always a priority, working towards his Bachelors and eventually a Masters degree. Then in 1982 they celebrated the arrival of their first baby girl, Melissa.

In 1983, Kevin decided to join the California Highway Patrol, he joined the academy in March and was stationed in Capistrano in August of the same year. Joining the CHP was a decision Kevin made with his whole heart. He lived and breathed the highways of Southern California, making the world a bit safer for everyone around him. Kevin was a friend, confidant and mentor to many officers during his time with the CHP. He loved what he did and everyone around him loved him for it.

1984 brought more changes for Kevin and Cheryl as they brought home two more children, Kathy and Krissy, and moved to Lakeside where Kevin would work from the  El Cajon Highway Patrol Office. He would spend the next 25 years in and out of the El Cajon Office, building relationships and patrolling the community he lived in. Kevin was a community man, he enjoyed knowing those around him and building friendships with neighbors and coworkers. He was friendly and outgoing; he didn’t shy away from hard conversations but had a the knowledge and pure intelligence that made it difficult for others to outsmart him.

Two more years brought another daughter, Kimmy, and the acceptance that he would always be outnumbered by women. Living in a household with women was another defining aspect of Kevin's life. He has always been fiercely loved and protected by all of his daughters and although his blood pressure may have been high his heart was full knowing they would always be there for him.  There is no man in the world more adored than a man with many daughters.

The late 80's and 90's were about growth and children. Kevin was an amazing father, often taking the girls to the Wild Animal Park and later coaching soccer teams. He was their biggest fan and their hero. He was the first to instigate water balloon fights and Russian leg wrestling. He threw people in the pool liberally and loved sitting by a fire with Irish music blasting for the whole neighborhood to hear. Kevin was am amazing story teller, and told his stories often. He had an uncanny ability to recall every historical event that has happened and was a huge fan of the Chargers, Padres and Fox News.

Kevin retired from the California Highway Patrol in December 2009. It would be hard for anyone to lose such a large part of their life and their identity, but after awhile he found his place as the best Grandpa ever. He poured his heart and energy into the grandchildren, dogs and coin collecting. We will forever keep his spirit and stories alive through the grandchildren.

He left too soon, but we can be happy knowing that he was able to live a very full life. He was loved by many and will always be remembered as a hero, a loving father, a fan, a friend, a chippy and the best grandpa ever.
