Dad's life

February 13, 2013

Laderl H. Harrison

Born on Dec. 16, 1940 of Pontotoc, MS

Laderl served in the Army and was stationed in Clarksdale & Toccopaola, Miss.

Dad’s active duties were, tractor operator, chef, and he was qualified as a Sharp Shooter  and departed the military with an Honorable discharge.

He told his story of how he earned a couple of his pins while in the army……He cooked for the General and his family and the General loved dad’s puffed rolls!

Dad was about 10 yrs old when he first developed a passion to play guitar. He loved to tell us his stories of how he would sneak his Aunt Audy’s guitar and tinker with it, then one day she ended up giving it to him. He grew up singing in the choir at his local church and later began one of his known careers as a professional musician in Country music. Dad and his band had the honor of opening for famous Country Artists in their local surrounding areas. It seemed like dad and his band lived in the garage, always making music for a their next show. We always loved to go hear dad sing and play music. At times dad would set up microphones out on the porch, get out his guitar and tell us girls to start singing, it was fun!. Dad was a truck-driver and traveled across country and would fit a gig in when he found the opportunity to do so.

One of the things he enjoyed the most was family, his favorite family holiday was Thanksgiving. Dad was pretty much the cook in our family and his favorite desert during Thanksgiving was his baked banana pudding.
I can remember growing up as a child, dad made us chocolate n bisciuts for breakfast....it was so yummy, maybe that's why I love chocolate so much. I now make it for my kids, and my brother makes it for his and so on.

There were times when dad had a little too much to drink that when he hid his money, he couldn’t remember where, so us kids thought it was fun going on a treasure hunt to find dad’s money! I can remember when dad would take us girls to the old country store and let us fill our bags full of “penny” candy, then our tummies ached!

Come Easter time, mom would get out her sewing machine and sew us all a new outfit. I can remember this one time it was dark blue with white poke a dots, dad in his white pants with a poke a dot shirt!! haha

Sissy and I loved to hear daddy sing……we would beg him, “please daddy, get out your guitar and sing Corina, Corina for us? “ and when he would, it just made our day!! He loved to come in while we were asleep and tickle our nose with a feather….and giggle and laugh….

I can remember dad’s whole family getting together for either a domino or rook game, he had a big family……big family ,big potlucks!!

Back in early 1980, both dad and mom worked at Yellow Cab Co. Mom dispatched and drove cab, dad did both to, but mostly drove cab…..all the cab drivers said” mom was a better dispatcher than dad……it was funny, cause dad would admit mom doing a better job!

Later on, dad and mom separated and got a divorce, I think it was because dad had a alcohol problem and mom just wanted to be free from that bondage, but it was good that they both remained friends and was able to talk to each other as friends. I know as the days for dad life drew to a end, he realized he was the cause of his own health issues, but after his quad bypass in 2001, he thanked the Lord for another day of life. Dad stayed single for a while and then he met Darr 6yrs ago and she became the love of his life. I thank God she was a part of his life, because dad became so in love and happy and he was always thanking God for life again. They both prayed together and I think dad’s relationship with God became stronger! Dad loved all his kids and grandkids and he wanted to see his grandkids do good and not be on drugs…..dad told me he prays for everyone every single night even though he was in a lot of physical pain, his heart was full of love for his kids and grandkids.

Since dad’s passing, God has really been there to comfort me in ways that are out of the ordinary, but God loves me that much and knows what each of us are in need of. I will always cherish and hold the good memories in my heart forever, I love and miss you so much daddy!!
