Poem for Big L

April 15, 2020
A friend wrote this poem and it reminds me of Larry,
A poem by Bev Bowers
She recorded it on Facebook.  Beginning she says she looks “Purdy darn good”. And this is a “Work in Progress”
When my rook of crows come for me
to escort me to my sweet bye and bye
Let my soul be packed with stories
Of the goodness we’re leaving behind
as we pass through the sky
Smiling down at the drakes and swans
Let my footsteps follow me out
                Leaving spotless paths behind
For new souls with their new ideas
They can plant their paths anew
                    May all the beloved people
Who weep for losing their lands
That we have tossed them from
Let me feel one last time
                           As I am earth bound
                             Those breezes on my face
As my body explodes into grace
                                   As yours will too sometime
Let us look back and hope and pray
                                That those who leave behind
Will care for this beautiful planet
will bring it back to health
So that we one more time
From wherever those crows drop us off
can come back and walk this place
                                      One more time.

March 19, 2013

Grandma's house on Warren Street.  We decorated for Christmas every year.

Larry said this was a fraction of what they used to put up in lights.  He hung nephew Andy from the top story by his pants so Andy could hang them on the gutters.

What a great tradition.

Grand Canyon

March 19, 2013

This was taken at the Grand Canyon.  It was a bus trip Larry and I took in the middle of the Vegas Vacation.  Beautiful but it was a long day.

Everyone should see the grand canyon, I think.

Camp Turnabouts's annual halloween party

January 28, 2013

Larry and I made these outfits.  I made the robes and he cut faces in the Pumpkin heads (fake pumpkin.)  He even had lights behind the eyes.

Here we are, jammin' at Camp Turnabouts's annual Halloween party...

We took second place that year.

Chevy Eldorado

January 28, 2013

Cool paint job, Huh!  Larry fell in love with this truck at Jeff Wyler's (Chevy Eldorado).  Just hadda have it.  He got lots of compliments on it, but fell head over heels for the Tundra, too.

Always the joker

January 28, 2013

Always the joker, Larry let me give him horns when we visited the Cinti Zoo with Kimmy, Katie and family.  It was a hot long day but loads of fun.  The first time we ever tasted "dippin dots".  Those ARE good.

Fish prep in Michigan

January 28, 2013

Larry's self appointed job was cleaning all the fresh salmon in Michigan,  He was very quick with it and the salmon was first rate.
They buried all the innards to act as fertilizer.

Lee and Dee Lookadoo have both passed on now.

Larry the professional boilermaker

This looks like the seamer Larry welded with but I am not entirely sure.

Wedding reception

January 28, 2013

This hug was taken at Roger and Audrey's wedding reception at Fiesta Key.

They had a cake bought by grandma, but also had delicious pieces of key lime pie, after a huge meal.
Lots of fun, especially the bag of favors they gave each person. There was a homemade CD that we played on the way home.  Little light up toys, that one of the kids (5 year old Harley) put in her hair,  As it blinked she said "Look, I am a cop car!!"  Her dad, Steve, is a detective.

It was a good time for everyone.

I don't remember the name of the restaurant, but Roger said it has been closed since.  Too bad, they had good food.

Granddaughter Kimmy in disguise

January 28, 2013

Granddaughter Kimmy, incognito in those sunglasses.  Her family was on vacation in California; she was 4 or 5 months old.

Kevin's silhouette

January 28, 2013

Larry took this picture at work of his friend Kevin silhouetted by a large tank.

Pretty cool, huh?
He loved photography and had an amazing eye for a good picture.

Self Portrait

January 28, 2013

This came from Larry's phone.
He was dirty, at work on second shift at Enerfab.  I think that hard hat was 30 years old.
As you can see from his shirt, he was definitely a Kentucky Wild Cats fan.  He bled blue.  :-)

While he was sick he watched every game in the college basketball tournament.  Kentucky won the championship and it was a record breaking warm spring.  Larry called it his spring.

Tube welding

January 28, 2013

Larry was proud of his tube welding abilities.  This is a heat exchanger he welded on.
Looks great!

Captain Larry

September 27, 2012

This is Captain Larry on the "Tastes Like Chicken" boat.  We took it up to Cincinnati and left our cooler on the dock.  What a thirsty day!
It took us a total of about 7 hours with the stop for lunch.
A lot of fun, but not so much fun that we ever did it again.  It wore us out....

Larry's garden

September 18, 2012

Larry's tomato garden.  Larry grew tomatoes for me and other people.  He hated them.   This 2010 was a huge bumper crop. It grew into the neighbors yard so they had tomatoes, too.   I had enough tomatoes to make green tomato relish which is a delicacy in the south.

We gave it as Christmas presents that year, along with apple butter and some canned apples.  Larry and I liked to cook/ create together.  What fun!

New Wave Runner

September 18, 2012

Right after this picture was taken, Larry reported that he had just gone 90 miles an hour! on the new Wave Runner!  I told him he was an idiot!  So unsafe!!

Larry never cared about safety when there was a chance for fun, though.  And he had a need for speed, part of his gusto for life.  He was very happy for his new record, no matter what the risk was...

The mouth of Gunpowder Creek

September 18, 2012

This is where Gunpowder Creek dumps into the Ohio river.  We dock at Gunpowder Creek, I have been there since 1992.
Karen, Lee and Larry started camping there in 1988.
Karen lived next door to Jeannie Leffler (my childhood Friend).  That's how I was introduced to Turnabout, and later to Larry.

Whenever I see this view, it always signals a day of fun on the river.  Good times for all!

Jolly Roger's Wake

September 18, 2012

This is the wake from The Jolly Roger.  Larry loved to go fast, even faster than his passengers (or at least I) wanted.
I have been mesmerized by the churning water of a boat since I was a small child on my Dad's boat.  Larry made sure I had plenty to look at.

Sisie's first fish

September 18, 2012

This was my first fish with Larry.  When I pulled it up, I wanted to throw it back immediately.  It was an all white catfish with red eyes.  Something diabolical that I wanted to get rid of..

Larry said it was because it was caught in very deep water.  Whatever the reason, it confirmed that I shouldn't be fishing.  You can see how uncomfortable I was by the way I was trying to distance myself from it.  Nevertheless, Larry was happy that I caught the thing.  Except for salmon, it was always catch and release....

Snagging salmon

September 18, 2012

Larry in his glory!  He loved wearing waders and challenging those fish. He was snagging salmon in Michigan, back when it was legal.  From the looks of his beard, I am guessing he was about 30 when this picture was taken.
And yes, the water is coooolllllllllld!

Tastes Like Chicken

September 18, 2012

This is the boat that we traded in the old Glasstron bow rider for.  It had a small cabin; a place to sleep, and 4 seats, so it wasn't freindly to a lot of guests.

Larry painted Tastes Like Chicken on it at my request.  We never knew what it meant, but people always laughed when they read that name.

It sucked up a plastic bag and the engine was blown, so we traded it in for the deck-boat: "The Jolly Roger".     That boat was much more fun!

Huge fish

September 18, 2012

Huge fish caught by Larry.  It was on the old Glasstron boat.  Audrey dressed her Dad in "Tommy" and other name brand clothes.
He was proud of those shirts...

The Country Kitchen

September 18, 2012

Larry and Harold are teasing a friend at the Country Kitchen in Michigan.  It is a restaurant known for the worst possible food.  Its main virtue is that the food was hot, but otherwise unidentifiable.

I once ordered some chili, and got something that looked like vegetable soup.  It was inedible.  However, it is the only restaurant for several miles....

Sisie and Boo

September 17, 2012

This is me and "Boo" in the front of the Glasstron bow-rider.  Larry had that boat when we started dating, in fact our first date was on that boat.  We both love the water.
I reupholstered it, and Larry put down new flooring.  It looked great! and then the engine had problems so we traded it in; Larry had had it for 15 years!  It did get mistaken for being new new the day before we traded it in.
Boo liked to go out on the boat and never offered to jump in for a swim.  Boo went everywhere with us, especially camping.  I still miss that dog.  She had a rare playful and intelligent spirit.

Larry was buried with her ashes in an urn.  He would have liked that.
