My name is Francis "Frank" Guthrie. I have been involved lately with writing my autobiography. Included in my autobiography are tributes to former close friends whom I knew throughout my life. I grew up in the small community of Broad Creek, NC and attended Morehead City High School. During my junior year, I drove a school bus and one of the riders of my bus was Larry. When I met him he was a senior. We developed a very close friendship and visited in one another's homes often. On Saturday evenings Mr. & Mrs. Southerland would travel into Morehead City and play bridge with Dr. and Mrs. Bonner. Larry and I would then have use of his father's old Ford car until we would pick them up at Dr. Bonner's. Sometimes we would have dates or interact with friends at Dom's drive in restaurant or went to the movies. After Larry graduated from High School, we only saw each other when he would return home from N. C. State during his first year there. After graduating from High School in 1955, I became employed with the FBI in their fingerprint Division, and eventually after getting my degree in Criminology I became a Federal Agent with the Office of Naval Intelligence, now known as Naval Criminal Investigative Service. I retired in September 1987 and 32 years of service. The last time I interacted with Larry was when he was in Morehead City visiting his parents, and my wife Janet and I were in Broad Creek visiting my family. That was probably 40 or more years ago.
This morning, I was talking with Janet about Larry and she said why don't you go on the internet and attempt to find him. When finding out on the internet that Larry passed away on April 25, 2012, I was saddened to learn of his death. He was a true, loyal, and "Terrific" friend. It is my honor to have know and been associated with him as a close friend. His family is so fortunate to have him as a part of your lives. I am now 83, enjoyed a successful and enjoyable life. Janet and I have been married for 57 years, and we do not have children.
Hopefully some of you family members will read this tribute soon. When it is read I would appreciate it if one of you would call me at your convenience at 757-286-5379. I would love to have the opportunity to talk with you regarding my friendship withLarry.
In sincere sympathy regarding the untimely passing of my friend Larry Southerland.

Practice my English........................................
By Paul Edmundus
I was 21 years old. I worked at a hotel project in Sanur, Bali-Indonesia. My Boss put me there as the project materials controller, such as rocks, sand, cement, brick etc. Six months beforehand, I was a waiter at his bar and restaurant which was not far from that new hotel project. I started to work for him on 29 April 1971.
It was April 1972, I forgot the date. I stood nearby the path to look at trucks to unloading the material. A tourist on a bike passed in front of me."Good morning Sir." I greeted him. He stopped his bike. With his smile He responded:" Good morning, how are you?." "I am fine Sir, what is your name?" That was the way how I practiced my English. He looked at me, then He answered my question:" My name is Lawrence Sutherland, you can call me Larry." I remembered that name. My Lecturer at the college taught me that I have to mention my name too. "Oh...Mr Larry, my name is Paul Edmundus. Please call me Paul. I am a student of Tourism & Hotel College here in Bali." I was proud to mention my study to a foreigner. Larry continued to respond my introduction:" I see, you are Paul and you are a tourism student." I did not want to stop talking:" Yes, Sir, but what do you see?" Larry looked at me with an astonished face." Paul, I see means I understand." I was embarrassed, but I did not want to loose my chance to learn English. "Oh...thank you Mr Larry....." He said very fast:"Paul, don't call me Mr. Larry, just call me Larry." "I see, I see.." I picked up his new lesson, I see means I understand.
Another truck arrived. I had to check what material was in it. Larry knew that I have to work. He wanted to continue biking south. He said:" Paul, you have to work. I have to go.......see you......" I waved my hands:" Bye bye Mr Larry.......ehhhhh bye bye Larry.......see you.." I did't know what was the meaning of "see you". There was no one to whom I could ask. After checking the truck which had brick in it, I measured and got the cubic of it, then I sat on a rock to wait whether Larry will came back through the same path. Then a carpenter came from the opposite direction who asked me why I was there. I said I wait for a tourist who was on a bike. The carpenter said He met the tourist on his bike drove to the north. I realized that when I was busy with the truck driver, Larry drove back at the same path. Will I meet him again? May be not....I was thinking the whole afternoon until I had to go to my campus at 5.00 PM to study.........

The world mourns his passing. He will be greatly missed.
He will be missed. Condolences to his family.
Larry was the ultimate Captain. Several years ago when I became a captain myself, I was advised that when things hit the fan in the cockpit ask yourself how your favorite captain would handle the situation, there have been many times where I ask myself "how would Larry handle this?" He was much admired and will be missed.
I was a member of the aircraft crew that so often featured Larry. My job, at times, was to direct the aircraft into cumulus clouds. I loved working with Larry! He was so easy going about taking the aircraft in whatever bizarre direction I asked for, or changed my mind about!

Materialism
My Dad had honor. He was reliable. On thing I can say about him was that he did not follow materialism. He did not lust for shiny things. He was finding happiness in his family only, not in having a nice car, or in the owning of things or keeping up with the Jones. He valued knowledge, and was fascinated by the internet. He told me once that having an internet connection was like having a library in your house. So I imagine a man busy in the library, knowledgable, informed, and with an intelligent opinion. He shunned materialism, but was mentally rich. He understood that life was short and valued the intellectual side of life. Talking to him was amazing. Dad was a smart man, and he understood many things about life that I am only beginning to understand. Dad, I salute your intelligence and your simple values, which are in reality very complex and well developed.
Practical Joker
I have been long time friends of Evan, Max and the sutherland family and would very often spend time at the sutherland home. I grew up on a farm where outside work is a normal part of my life. One of those daily chores I grew up with was splitting wood and became very good at it. So good my confidence for success was really high. One day I was hanging out with Max and Evan when Larry came up to me saying he heard that I was good at splitting wood. He said he would like to see if what he heard was really true. For those who don't know me I am a determined and a competitive person and I WILL achieve my goal. So a challenge from Larry was gladly taken. Out in his woodshed I began to swing at the wood piece. I kept on swinging with a suprised oddity that that wood still stood. I swung and swung so many times I couldn't count anymore. I thought my form may have been off, or my technique and power follow through may have been wrong. While I was troubleshooting why this piece of firewood wouldn't split I finally took my focus off the wood and looked up to Larry to see him trying to hold back deep laughter. I did not understand. I was in a limbo of confusion while Larry took many minutes of laughter and forced small words out I couldn't understand. Finally, he was able to tell me that the piece of wood was cherry tree. If you are unfamiliaer cherry tree the wood may split, but the bark around the wood is so strong it keeps it together. I never split that piece of wood and my confidence was humbled by Larry's practical Joke. I have never split cherry tree wood since.
I will always remember you Larry for many memories you have in my life. You are a Great man, leader and a fun guy to be around. Thanks for the laughter you still provide to me to this day.

Like a big brother
I had the good fortune to spend many hours and days with Larry over the fourty years we have been friends. Remarkably consistent and principled all those years and a pleasure to be with.
He wrote the book on raising boys. He and Rena produced a houseful of great ones! Once, as the crew bus was passing a school yard full of joyus kids, Larry remarked : " Looks just like my backyard".
All six sons have that solid Sutherland presence that would make any dad proud. He was definitely proud of them all!
He is missed and will be often remembered....
