MOMMA

May 5, 2010

My Momma was the finest person I have ever met…and believe me, I have met many.  She was personable and private, but would have message on any subject.  She counseled numerous people from various stations in life, educated ministers, medical physicians, nieces & their husbands, nephews & their wives and always, always her own children and grandbabies.  She never complained and would not borrow a biscuit if she was hungry; she worked two full-time to support us four [4] jobs to support keep us out of the projects; leaped the neighbor’s fence to save her boys from a vicious dog with an apple paring knife.  She was faithful and refused to abandon her dead church.   She’d say I’m praying for them to get saved.  She stayed & prayed until the Holy Ghost fell on the pastor and a number of others.

Momma learned to cook in the South for the white folks and maintained those skills now shared through me.  She worked hard to help her mother and father which is how my journey got started.   She never loved my father, a much older man, but through him she could bless her family.  She later married him after she learned about me.  As he was good provider, she decided to have all four of us by him.  She stayed through some rough times when she’d gotten enough of Mississippi and moved to Chicago.

My Momma was an avid reader and loved all things concerning the history of Black people and accumulated many books.   Unlike her sisters and brothers, she kept in touch with her family and our house was always home to various family members.
