A kind woman and steadfast mother
Loretta Carmel died in the early morning hours of Sept 14th.
Loretta came from New York where she was a fashion model at
Saks Fifth Avenue after the war. On Dec 27, 1947 she married her
Bronx boyfriend Milton Carmel and moved to Wilkes Barre
where Milton had the opportunity to apprentice in his uncle's shoe factory.
The first to speak for the Jewish women's organization on TV,
her years as president of Hadassah saw increased awareness
and membership in the Greater Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania.
An accomplish artist and sculptor, Loretta's stone work
is on display at Bloomsburg University.
“Lively, warm and wonderfully engaging”, her nieces and nephews spoke of her
as an inspiring mentor and a person you hoped to become.
Loretta moved to Shamokin in 1954 with her husband Milton who
began manufacturing women's footwear at the former Eagle Silk Mill.
They moved from Shamokin to S. Orange NJ for several years
and then to Bloomsburg in 1983. Throughout her life, Loretta
remained deeply connected with her sister Pauline and brother Harry.
Loretta was steadfast as a loving, supportive mother and is survived by her
two adult children Bruce and Stacy, three grandchildren Lori, Joseph and Sara
and seven great grandchildren, Nicolas, Rebecca, Olivia, Reagan, Noah,
Elizabeth and Joseph.
Loretta died in W. Orange NJ after a four year struggle with Pancreatic cancer.
She was greatly loved and will be missed.
