Her Life
May 13, 2016

Lorraine lived a bright and colourful life. Raised in Sri Lanka, she made her home all over the world, from Hong Kong to England to Australia, even managing to squeeze in a little time to live in Brooklyn, New York.

She worked hard at a range of jobs, cutting her teeth under people like Derek Davies at the Far Eastern Economic Review in HK and Alastair Burnet at The Economist in London, and treasured her memories of those times and those people right to the end. Later in her career she worked in marketing, making good friends with her colleagues at B&Q and FESA, among other places.

Lorraine was the oldest sibling in a large family consisting of many sisters and one brother (poor boy!). She had many great stories of growing up in Sri Lanka, climbing mango trees and dancing her nights away at the Coconut Grove disco at the Galle Face Hotel. Her storytelling ability is one of the many, many things that we will all miss about her.

Lorraine married Wesley McMillan in Hong Kong in March 1976. Their relationship was fiery, to say the least, and though they were estranged during Wesley's illness, she was with him when he passed away in 2001, and they had a short, precious time to make their peace.

Lorraine had one daughter, Tara, born in 1980. As a mother, she gave everything of herself and found great joy in her daughter's achievements and adventures. She raised Tara to be strong and independent, just like she was.

Times were not always easy for Lorraine; her jobs were often stressful and this took its toll on her in many ways. Her home life was not as ideal as she had hoped. She struggled with her health for many years. But despite all of that, she managed to keep smiling, to keep telling stories, to entertain, to maintain friendships, to inspire love in others, to raise a well-balanced daughter, and to keep her family ties strong.

We are all proud of you, Lorraine, and we love you and miss you more than you can ever know.
