Favorite Nephew

September 19, 2013

One of the best parts of living with Russ and Marianne at the campground was that we went out to breakfast EVERY morning. Heaven on earth for an active teenager!
I loved hearing the stories about my parents and grandparents, taliking about the business of running a campground and just being together.
Marianne was always an encourager to me in those times as we would discuss the day's work that lay ahead.  One day she proclaimed, "you know, I must tell you that YOU are myFAVORITE nephew". My chin rose and my chest puffed out as I basked in this great compliment. My unfounded pride was soon humbled however as I realized that I was in fact Marianne's ONLY nephew.  We laughed so heartily that we disrupted the adjacent tables. A great memory!

Surprise!

September 17, 2013

In September of 1984. Marianne had a surprise 50th birthday party at the campground for Russ.  There was a band, dancing, and meatball sandwiches with salad and drinks for all the campers (over 200) over the labor day holiday.   Italian food was always one of Russ and Marianne’s favorites.

They first met ......

Russ Stewart and Marianne Reeth met for the first time in 1973 at a dance held at the Cresthaven Christian Country Club.  It was an icy winter night.  Russ struck up a conversation.  After many dances to the rock and roll music of the sixties and seventies (Proud mary being one of Marianne’s favorities), Russ walked Marianne to her car and got her phone number.  He thought, “Wow, she can dance up a storm!”

Reeth's Wreaths

September 17, 2013

Marianne was always up to a challenge: One time while camping in Connecticut, Marianne and I saw a beautiful Christmas wreath made from Princess Pine, an 8-inch ground cover plant shaped like a miniature evergreen tree.  It grows wild in the local woods where we were camping at the time.  Marianne, always creative, said she could not only duplicate the wreaths but actually improve on the workmanship  ... “and they would sell like hotcakes.”   I questioned her ability and the next thing I knew, the Stewart-three  (Marianne, myself and Patty, our daughter) would be in the woods picking Princess Pine for our new venture.  Marianne completed and filled a van with beautiful wreaths.  We set up a table a the local flea market and sold all of the wreaths by noon;  another  “I told you so,” credit for Marianne.
