He brought with him a love of the outdoors and an avid interest in mountain biking, skiing, and camping. He was also a skilled cabinet maker and amateur builder. His computer skills and aesthetic eye were well known. His intellectual curiosity led him ever deeper into medicine but also into a broad array of liberal arts. For example, he readily engaged in conversation about history, architecture, and current events,

His commitment to medicine was grounded in a desire to empower people with knowledge and responsibility to care for themselves and mitigate effects of chronic illness. With a gift for thinking forward and holistically, he contributed importantly to the direction of his medical center.
