Reflections of Mary

January 27, 1939 – May 6, 2016

Mary Glady Geter Echols entered this life on Jan. 27, 1939, to the late Mary Elnore Petty and Mitchell C. (Dit) Geter.

Mary was a strong believer in the power of God throughout her entire life. She joined the Bethel Heard Baptist Church family at an early age. Mary grew up with the teachings of the Bible and Jesus Christ, which she used to help guide her life, all her days.

Mary attended school in Coweta County. She was an achiever, always known as being smart and getting excellent grades in school. She graduated as salutatorian from Central high school in 1958. She attended Clark College in Atlanta Ga after high school, then later in life completed her Bachelor of Science degree from West Georgia College in Carrollton Ga. During her earlier years in between her years of study she spent time living in New York. She eventually relocated to Ga where she married the late Garnett Echols. They were married for over 25 years until his passing in 2003.

Mary had a very successful career as an educator, teaching math for over 25 years. First at Woodbury Elementary in Woodbury Ga, then at Brandon Hall Academy (college preparatory boarding school in Atlanta) where she retired from teaching.

She was a devoted and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend to a many of persons throughout her life. By close friends and family Mary was known as a strong, tough but caring and loving person. She was also well-known and loved by those in the community in which she lived. She could often be seen walking, working in the yard, or participating in activities with the Colonial Hills Neighborhood Assoc of East Point Ga.

Mary was an active student of the Bible, attending meetings and Bible classes at the local church in her neighborhood and elsewhere. During her life Mary was extremely devoted to research and obtaining information about family history which allowed her to develop “Wings On A Dove” a family genealogy tree that dates back to 1830. Some of Mary’s hobbies included reading, sewing, cooking, and she had a creative flare that kept her busy on projects decorating her home inside and outside over the years.

Mary was a meticulous organizer of data she archived, most of which concerned education and family history. As recent as April of this year she was considering classes available at Quality Living Services and also reviewing college brochures, she loved learning. Mary was a great inspiration to a lot of those who knew her and she loved helping others. For this and many other fine qualities, she will be remembered always.
