A centennial celebration for Mary was held on Saturday June 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Penthouse 2500 located in the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, 505 N Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304

On Saturday, June 15, 2019 Maria (Mary) Santos Teixeira passed peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 99, just one month shy of her 100th birthday (born July 31, 1919).

She is survived by her beloved sons Daniel S. Teixeira and George S. Teixeira. Her daughter-in-law Diane Teixeira and her treasured twin grandsons John and Chris Teixeira, her favorite man Rick Ramirez and other loving and extended family members who treated her as their ‘vovozinha’ (granny). Maria also will be lovingly remembered by many other close friends and all her Leisure House condominium family who treated her so kindly and held an early 100th birthday celebration in her honor this year.

Mary loved living by the beach and seeing the ocean every day, therefore a centennial celebration of her life will be held on Saturday June 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Penthouse 2500 located in the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, 505 N Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304.

In Lieu of flowers, we prefer that expressions of sympathy made in Mary’s name go to:

Vovozina, you haven't passed because you'll always be in my heart but I know you're looking down at us from heaven.
You were truly an angel on Earth. We miss you very, very much...all of us.
You took all of us under your wing like we were your children. It was a blessing to know you but it would be more of a blessing if everyone of us could be just like you because you were the best role model and example ever.
I was blessed to know you

Mary
My wonderful friend. How I loved to talk to you about life. You loved your sons, daughter and son in law and your grandsons. I loved our talks about the rating system. And our plans to go in the town and pick up the young friendships. We were full of talk and had no action. It was our way of enjoying life at our own expense. I will miss you more than you know.  Your smile lit up the room and your wisdom enhanced my life. I loved you with my heart and you were generous and kind to me for the last 35 plus years.  I know you are telling Jesus about your ranking system that made us laugh. No greater love was there than the love you had for your sons. They stayed with you until the end because of their love for you. The look of a favorite family. Caring, sharing, love, honesty, truth and integrity. I miss you. Now, no more black dress

It would be safe to assume that if George exhibited the same virtues as his mom Mary, she must have been an epitomization of kindness and generosity. May your soul rest in eternal peace, Ameen !

Dear Texeira Family,
I did not have the privilege to know the beautiful lady Maria and I am truly sorry for your loss. I am however grateful that her love, her compassion and her beautiful soul endure in the hands of those who so effortlessly carry her legacy of being the path, the journey, the light, the question and the answer for a better world...

How can I ever thank you mom for being there for me every day? It was a privilege to be your son as we shared so many fun times together. How fortunate can a son be to have a career next door to you at the W when I was the manager 15 years ago and recently God gave me another manager position literally across the street from you at Four Seasons to make sure I saw you daily. I loved calling you saying “watch me walk to work in my newest suit or tie to get your approval”. Those are memories of a lifetime that will always make me smile as you ran outside on your verandah to see me strut. You thought I was performing for you but it was the reverse for me as seeing you smile and wave back was all I needed to have a peaceful day. I promise to still strut down the street daily as I know you are still looking down watching. RIP Mom

Her Life

An amazing life story

June 16, 2019

Mary experienced an amazing long life, she was born on July 31, 1919, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the daughter of Maria Pereira Campanario and Francisco Abreu Santos; she had 4 brothers and one sister.

At 3 years old her family moved to the island of Maderia Portugal where she lived until she was 12. Her father then decided to move the family to a small rural farm located near Taubaté Brazil. Mary’s mom then passed away at the age of 44 and her father shortly thereafter making Mary the effective mother, breadwinner and caretaker of her family.

After the war with all her siblings being married and Mary being single with her USA citizenship, she decided at the age of 29 to return to the USA to live with her uncle’s family in New Britain Connecticut. She worked first as a seamstress and as a factory worker and eventually met and married George Teixeira in 1954; who was from the same village in Maderia and whom she knew from her childhood.

She then traveled back to Maderia and had her first son George at the age of 39, and also had her son Daniel there at age 44.

The family moved back to the USA, to Hollywood Beach, Fl in 1963 where they owned and managed the Bella Vista Apartments near the ocean where Mary raised her two sons. At age 56, Mary received her driver’s license and continued to drive until she was 96 years old.

At age 61, in 1981 she sold the business and began her retirement years by traveling. She enjoyed her family and especially the birth and care of her grandchildren. She finally moved to Fort Lauderdale Beach in 1988 to return to a life she loved, with a residence by the beach so she could walk by her ocean. She was actively involved in the Leisure House condo board and was adopted as ‘mom’ by her condo family.

Mary always had a love of animals from her first dog, a dachshund to her many cats named Seba, and later in life her beloved companions, her Yorkie Bella and her Himalayan cat Baby.

Maria enjoyed making her Portuguese kale soup, polenta and fish meals. She even cooked up a meal the day before she passed. Recently she showed me how to properly prepare kale (video snippet attached) for the soup. Btw, being someone who lived through the depression, it was interesting to see her pantry which contained over 25 cans of Tuna and Salmon, multiple bottles of olive oil, plenty of beans, rice, potatoes and cornmeal and her fridge was stocked with recently caught whole fish which she cleaned and filleted by hand. She always remembers the times when food was scarce and therefore always remained grateful for the plentiful food in our lives in America so she liked to stock up, just in case ;-)

Maria as an Artist at Age 97

June 18, 2019

During the summer when residents went back North, Maria took out her art supplies and started to paint. She was prolific at the task. When Bella, her dog passed away, she needed to concentrate on something to help her heal. This was the perfect outlet.  She would spend hours on her art books to make the day go by faster.

When I first saw her completed book, I was blown away by her sense of color, her accuracy and steady hand and her awareness of line, shape and form to create an interesting composition. She really gave it a lot of thought and enjoyed doing it. I was so proud of her!.

I showed my sister Patti, her art work and she told Maria that we should enter her work in an Art Show so everyone can see her special talent at age 97!.  Her face lit up with the most beautiful smile. "You are a true artist, Maria!" This really excited her and motivated her to continue. By the end of November 2019 she completed almost 6-8 books and her last two canvas paintings. One is a Butterfly and the other is a Flamingo.  I was honored and inspired to have this special gift from my beautiful mother in law, the artist!
