Matt, it's Christmas, the third without you. Valerio and me spent a wonderful week in your home in Rockport, we slept among your books, I sat, early in the morning, in "your" armchair, waiting for the sunrise, talking with Marghe, watching the seagulls going with the boats.
We had peaceful, wonderful, happy moments with Meghan, Kathy and Mike, such special persons, of course you know, as you are, too.
We visited your grave and prayed for you(I hope you appreciated the pumpkin).
We didn't forget you and never will.
We'll pray for you, pray for us.
Give peace to your family, let them have a good Christmas, they miss you so much.

I only knew Matt from a Tufts program and never even knew about his cancer. What I remember most is how upbeat, kind and friendly he was to absolutely everyone he met, always laughing and smiling. Knowing now what he must have been dealing with then, I am all the more impressed by his character. My heart goes out to the Sheas and everyone else touched by Matt's life. - Amanda

Although, I only knew Matt from a few family functions over the years, I have found myself thinking of him often this past month. Realizing what I have lost in never getting a chance to know him better. I grieve for your loss and know he is in a better place. Time will not erase the pain of loss but hopefully allow you to rejoice in the life he did lead. God Bless!

To laugh often and much;To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better . . .To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - This is to have succeeded." *5/20/85 A life full of success

I have been taught that God is closest to us when we suffer, sometimes even carrying us as the Footprints prayer shows us. Matt lived his life like he knew this to be true. I was truly inspired by his example. Thank you Matt for all that you taught me and continue to teach me. Love never ends.

Dearest Meg and the Shea family - Although I only knew Matt through Meg's stories, his kind and generous heart shone through them, just like in these pictures. Thank you so much for sharing these happy memories of Matt with us all. It's clear how very special he was to everyone around him.

So many wonderful memories of Matt...he was a loving, kind, gentle and patient person, especially to me. I'll always cherish our talks and ridiculous games long after the bus had gone...<3 Gill

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." -Henry Thoreau
Matt, you lived and lived well, with love, kindness, gentleness and humor. What more could any of us ask?

Kathy and family, I only met Matt once, at the Compass golf event and my memory of that day is Matt's smile. Through my sister, Nancy Sandman and my niece, Alison, I have heard countless stories of Matt's courage and wonderful personality. He was so resilient and made a huge impression on anyone who heard his story. My love and thoughts are with you.

I remember when Matt was a Peer Minister at Blessed Sacrament, while still in High School. He helped me to teach Confirmation students. He would show up for every class, despite being visibly exhausted from his cancer treatments. His presence inspired us all. I will never forget this and he certainly helped me and many students through their faith journey.Condolences Brian and Donna Gannon

Italian dinner in Rockport...

June 7, 2013

Me and Matt discussing about food... he loved italian food!!!!

On his birthday

May 28, 2013

I know this is a little late, given that his birthday was last week, but I thought i'd share. Matt and I were in the same year at Tufts but were actually 14 months apart (which was super useful when he was 21 and I was 19!) Each year we'd talk on his birthday and decide not to talk for the next two months because the age difference was just too much. There were lots of "oh you wouldn't understand, you're so immature!" and "Do you want some ensure, grandpa?" during his birthday call every year, and we'd vow not to speak until my birthday in July. When inevitably we did speak (we were always great phone talkers) we'd usually end the call yelling at each other, "this is why we're not supposed to be talking! The gulf is too large!" Then, when my birthday rolled around, he'd call me and say, "whew! finally! That was terrible. Glad we're all caught up." It was our little birthday joke and I thought about it all day on the 20th. So, in memory of Matt I had my friends toast in his honor of his birthday. I miss him dearly.
