About Mama Bikok

July 8, 2015

Mme Bikok nee Som Marie Blandine Beatrice was born on June 10 1957 by late Som Martin and Ngo Hoblog Colette at Hebga-Pouma. In 1981, she graduated from the University of Yaounde (CUSS) where she met her future husband late Justice Bikok Mapouna George, got married to him the same year and built a happy family with children. As her husband moved around for various assignments in several regions in Cameroon, Mama Bikok accompanied him working as a health care civil servant from 1981 until May 2013 where she retired from the Ministry of Public Health. Unfortunately, Mama Bikok tragically lost her husband in 2011, an experience that severely affected her

In an effort to keep close contact with her children after the death of her husband and retirement, she visited her eldest son in the United Kingdom from February to August 2013. On March 2014, she also excitedly visited her only daughter in the United States who was expecting her first grandson. On Easter day (April 2014), she happily witnessed the birth of her grandson while actively assisting her daughter in the delivery room. It was one of the happiest (if not the happiest) days of her life.

Unfortunately in May 2014, she was diagnosed with metastatic Breast cancer and started the grueling process of radiation followed by chemotherapy. Despite the brutality of the treatment and the severity of the diagnosis, Mama Bikok opposed a ferocious resistance to the disease, defying the doctor’s prognosis. She fought the cancer as hard as she could, making sure she went to church even when she could hardly get up. After several treatments, Mama lost her battle with cancer on July 2nd 2015 with her daughter by her side.

Being a staunch Catholic Christian, Mama Bikok died actively going to church and being an active member of the Catholic Women Association. She leaves behind her mother, 5 kids, 2 grand kids, 4 siblings and several adopted kids. She will be greatly missed. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
