ForeverMissed

Mary Nelson was the embodiment of a teacher and artist, always with a quick wit and a heart of gold. Her influence on her students, friends, and family has been profound. She was a fierce advocate for her family and friends, as well as for the Redskins, the Braves, Roger Federer & Serena Williams, and any team playing for the University of Virginia. Her love of pets was obvious as she never was without a pet either adopted or found, and the feeling was mutual!

She rarely found a situation unworthy of a joke, a child or animal undeserving of a wave, or a sales clerk with a long line unfit for an even longer story. Her curiosity was insatiable, resulting in many long nights on the computer researching an incredibly wide range of topics. That included her interest in genealogy, something she shared with quite a few family members. It's also hard to imagine that very many Facebook posts escaped her view. World travel was a passion in her younger days but later in life she considered getting lost to be a grand adventure. She got a lot of practice.

No matter how many challenges and tragedies she faced she always considered herself lucky. Whenever she lost someone she always kept the memory of them very close to her. They remained a part of her life. I am certain many of us will also keep her alive.

The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, physical therapists, and others who provided her great care at Bon Secours Memorial General and Encompass Health. Their compassion for her and us was always felt clearly.

Her husband, Alvin, and I were good friends back in the 70's & 80's, playing in a couple of bands during that time and also gathering at various homes of his, mine and others for all night jams and just good fun. When he met Mary it seemed his life became full circle and a peace settled over him that was very special. Mary brought that to him and I know he was very grateful for the time they had together.
A wonderful lady who always made us feel welcome. I know she will be missed by many.

Her Life

Early Life

September 5, 2019
Mary Nelson Payne was born in Washington, DC on May 14, 1944 to Thomas W. Payne and Elaine Yellott Payne. When asked what state she was born in, she always replied that she wasn't born in any state. She and her older brother, Thomas W. Payne, Jr. were soon joined by a little brother named Charles Payne. The family moved to Richmond, VA when she was a child. She enjoyed spending time at the family farm and gatherings with her cousins.

Education

September 8, 2019
She graduated from Richmond's Thomas Jefferson High School in 1962. She remained in contact with her classmates and enjoyed gathering with them in recent years. After initially studying art at Averett College she decided she would like to teach English and transferred to Richmond Professional Institute (later known as Virginia Commonwealth University). She also studied theater, working as a stage and light technician in 1972 and acting in VCU's summer stock in 1973. Mary Nelson received her MA in English Education from VCU in 1977.

Career

September 5, 2019
She taught English and Speech in Henrico County Public Schools from 1967-1977. She sponsored the cheerleaders at each school as well as the Junior class. At Hermitage she used her theater experience to direct a one act play. After receiving her MA, she became an adjunct professor at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and worked as a corporate instructor with Bell Atlantic's Atlas Program. Mary Nelson also volunteered at a prison, helping the inmates improve their writing skills. In 1988, she joined the faculty of Randolph-Macon College and served as an adjunct professor in the English department for nearly 3 decades. She whipped the first-year students into shape in her freshman composition course.

What a character! What a Sister!

September 20, 2019
My sister Mary Nelson. She has left us much too soon. She was 5 years younger than me, so some might say I was a big influence on her life. To the contrary, our Mother, thankfully, was more significant and was instrumental in her development in so many ways. Both had wonderful creative artistic talent. Both had a terrific smile and laughed more than they should, sometimes and often in the wrong places. Both cared so much about family. Our Father had a significant influence on her about family and especially family history. Someday, down the road, her mental notes about our family that were told to her by our Father will come to the forefront. Mary Nelson took special care to love and support her immediate family, Laura, Alvin and Nathan. When we were growing up, the family operated daily as a unit around the dinner table, much more so than families enjoy today. We made time for dinner and conversation. For me, as a 10-year-old brother, I had a puppet! Mary Nelson could be convinced to cause chaos so easily and I often used her skills effectively.  Her skills learning to talk became her gift for gab and later in life her filibuster skills. Many times, we heard the comment, “I’m talking” from someone other than her. This was perhaps the beginning of her love of English language and obviously led her to teach. Not unlike her Mother, she developed some devilish like skills that could have been a clone of our Mother. Dad planted and harvested peas from the Payne farm in Lagrange, not the English Pea variety, but as our Mother said, “bullets”. Mary Nelson absolutely hated them. One time I got her a Pea Shooter and suggested that she bring it to the dinner table and show the family her newfound skill with a “bullet shooter”. This backfired, and I was sent to my room! Payback! In addition, we had Fordhook Lima Beans which Mary Nelson felt were something that should be pushed around the plate with a spoon, sometimes in a race, but not eaten. What is significant about peas and lima beans in terms of Mary Nelson? It has to do with Mary Nelson’s creativeness early in life. She knew if she ate slow, our Mother would fuss at her, and eventually she would be alone at the table finishing up her dinner. When we all left the table, she proceeded to get creative. When we moved from Kensington to Bromley Lane in the 50’s, the movers were getting ready to pack the dining room Sideboard, and to their surprise, and that of our Mother, there were many of Mary Nelson’s dried peas and lima beans that fell out on the floor from behind the Sideboard. Clever Mary Nelson! There were several years’ worth of Mary Nelson’s unwanted vegetables that she had obviously been saving for a dried arrangement that Mother could display at the Garden Club. What a team! As a sister, a confidant, a shoulder and an adviser, Mary Nelson was loved by all of us, and we will surely miss her.

Coolest. Aunt. Ever.

September 12, 2019
I'm lucky enough to be Mary Nelson's niece, her ONLY niece. I take great pride in that and she doted on me a LOT. I could tell you crazy stories that we all know we have, but what I love most about Mary Nelson is that she gave me her time and undivided attention. When I see a field of wildflowers I immediately remember summers with Mary Nelson. We would go out into her yard and pick white wildflowers. She always had milk jugs on hand. She cut off the top so we could fill them with water and still use the handle. Then we made something plain into beauty. We put food coloring into the milk jugs and left the flowers in the colored water overnight. Sometimes we had amazing colors and sometimes we had some flowers that needed to be hidden underneath the prettier ones. But, I remember coloring flowers ALL the time. I looked forward to it every summer. It wasn't fancy, it wasn't expensive and it's the memory of spending time doing something fun that I carry with me. She gave me her time and her love. She was the coolest aunt ever.
