Bravery

May 11, 2015

Once my brother in law Michou asked Mom, “Tante, when are going to court? I can take you.”  I turned around saying, “Court? What? For Mom?” She was completely calm and replied, “Oh nothing, it’s not a big deal”. I insisted to know what was going on. Finally, I learned that there was a hold up at the store where she worked as a cashier at that time and someone had held a gun against her head demanding for the register money.  She managed to press the button to alert the police and the gunman escaped.  The incident was reported and she was subpoenaed  and needed to appear in court to identify the criminal.   I was terrified just listing to the story and asked her, “weren’t you scared mom”? She replied with confidence, “No, this type of person is a coward by nature. They are afraid of you more than you think”. Amazing!

Trust

May 11, 2015

In the year 2000, my parents had made a tour trip to the Holy Land and Egypt with a church group.  I was calling them to check on them periodically wherever they were at depending on the location they would arrive to.  Everything is going smoothly and they’re having the best of times.  On the day they arrived back at LAX, relatives and myself went to meet the church group at the airport. When they had all arrived, my parents went into another family member’s car to be taken back home. I gave a ride to one of the group member’s home whom happened to reside nearby.  The moment he sat in the car, I said  “welcome back, how’s the trip?”

He replied, “It was a wonderful trip and what happened with your mother was an amazing miracle”.  I was startled and replied, “What happened to my mother? I called them almost daily, I haven’t heard anything”. He said, “Oh, you didn’t know that she had lost her purse in Egypt for almost a full day?”  He continued stating that her purse that had contained her Egyptian and American passports, her I.Ds, her money and her checkbook (in another word, her life) was in that purse. They turned the bus upside down and went back to the last stop and searched the place.  No sign of a purse.

In addition, it was a weekend and the American Embassy was closed on weekends. To add the pressure, the trip was coming to a closure and she would not be able to go through customs without her various forms of documentation. You can imagine the nightmare and the thought of dealing with any governmental office at this point.  The tension started to rise and the entire group of members started to pray and pray some more.  The truth of the matter was that only God could take care of the matter at that point.  Lo and behold, a local, dear, and faithful neighbor and family friend heard of the incident.  He went on his own tracing back the trail of the trip that day.  He went to all the places they had visited that day asking if anyone had found a purse.  Needless to say, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Then he went to the Holy Virgin Mary church and asked the guard if he had found a purse and but to no avail. He had then walked to the shrine/ altar and lo and behold there was the purse all intact, untouched and undisturbed. Her purse was sitting in the very spot she knelt down to pray. She had gotten up with her cane, and with cane in hand, she had gone on her way. Nothing was missing. Not a piaster. The whole trip was ecstatic and glorified God for His miraculous hand in work with Mom.

During the whole ordeal, Mom had kept quiet and peaceful as usual. I was touched and taken by the story primarily due to my Mom’s inner faith and strength and how she kept it all to herself without any sign of disturbance. When the going gets tough, the tough submit it to God.  That was her motto until the end of days.
