This memorial website was created in the memory of our loved one, Nella Uitvlugt. We will remember her forever.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  --Romans 8:38-39

From winter to spring,
the seasons change.

God always was, is, and will be,
He is unchangeable.

From birth, life, then to death,
we seek relevance.

His grace is sufficient,

Losing someone dear,
doubt and uncertainty.

God provides comfort,

From God, wonderfully!

Dear Eric and Family,
I can't think of a more appropriate tribute to Nella's life and work than the AAIDD's Henri Nouwen award. Nella's commitment, joy, and talents in serving people with IDD through Friendship Ministries remain an inspiration to me and many others.

A whole year has passed already. Still there are times when I think that I need to ask Nella about this or tell her about something that has happened at a Friendship meeting. Just to spend some time laughing and sharing ideas together. You are missed, my friend, yet we rejoice that you have gone home. Eric, we keep you in our prayers. The door is always open if you should want to come for a visit. Sid & Mona

I just learned of Nella's home-going last Monday evening and I still have some tears welling up for the whole of the Friendship Ministries family.  I first met Nella on the telephone when I started my Friendship Ministry 16 years ago. She was uniquely gifted by God for this ministry, an intelligent Christian woman, and a great servant of God. Looking forward to the FM reunion in heaven

Dearest family and firends of Nella,
My heart grieves with you as we miss Nella physical presence ,but her spirit and love lives on in all we do. I have ministered in the Catholic Diocese of Bufalo to my sisters and brothers with disabilties for 13 years and met Nella at a conference in Boston. She was always there with wisdom, inspiration and freindship. God Bless.

Nella will be missed in so many ways: a voice for those often excluded, a loving mother and wife, a mentor to many, and a friend to whomever she met. What God accomplished through her was amazing and she will be sorely missed. We can rest knowing that God ways are always right even though we might not comprehend them, Nella's legacy will continue, and she is no longer in pain.

Not only did Nella welcome and show great interest in our grandson who enjoyed Friendship classes at Plymouth Heights for a couple years, but she could draw prayer requests from his indistinguishable speech that he totally agreed with: for his dad who is serving a life sentence in prison and whom Troy Jr. hasn't seen for more than 15 years. Nella knew his heart and touched it.

A Hopeful Story

April 9, 2013

This story was sent to the Friendship staff by Pastor Peter Slofstra of Hope Fellowship Church in Courtice, Ontario:

Last year, Friendship Ministries, a ministry designed to make people with intellectual disabilities feel included in church, became an associate member of the Canadian Council of Churches. I attended the May meeting in Ottawa where this decision was made and had the opportunity to meet and chat with Nella Uitvlugt from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who was the Executive Director of this wonderful organization.

When I mentioned that Hope Fellowship, my church in Courtice, Ontario, had at least three families with an intellectually challenged child, she asked if I had ever considered leading them in a New Members Class so that they could take their place with other professing members in the church. I confessed that I had not thought about this but that I was certainly willing to pursue the idea.

A subsequent conversation with one of the parents gave some more impetus to the idea. Eventually I ordered specially designed materials for “friends with intellectual disabilities” and Saturday mornings now find me singing and talking about Jesus with Hailey Hampson, Sarah Hoekstra, Carly Troup and their parents. These three young ladies hope to profess their faith in Jesus publicly along with all the others who have attended this year’s New Members Classes. On May 26, you will see and hear for yourself how talented Hailey, Sarah and Carly are and how much they love the Lord!

It was very shocking, therefore, to hear that the person who inspired this initiative died suddenly on Wednesday, March 20, at the young age of 60.
According to a story about her in the Grand Rapids Press, Nella grew up poor as a preacher’s kid in Ontario before moving to Michigan with her family at age fourteen where she didn’t fit in with her new classmates at East Christian.

“Nobody knew what to do with us,” she recalls. “We wore hand-me-downs and homemade clothes. I had two outfits. I didn’t know I was supposed to carry a purse. We talked funny. Our parents were old. It wasn’t cool to be Canadian in the U.S. in the ’60s.”

So who befriended her? A neighbor girl named Emily, who had an intellectual disability. “She was the most welcoming person,” Nella recalls. “She would always say, ‘Hi, Nella!’ She taught me that the gift of hospitality can come from anybody.” From this important formative experience and the additional personal experience of a son who had severe communication problems in his early years, she went on to oversee a thousand plus Friendship Groups in seventy-five denominations in twenty-eight countries!

She will be dearly missed by her family, colleagues and many “friends”. I’m just thankful to God for the opportunity to be inspired by her in time to get more involved with our “friends” at Hope Fellowship Church.

Our inexpressible sympathies to the entire Uitvlugt and Hoogland families from the Kuiper Family.

Elizabeth  remembers the connection made while working at Sheldon Cleaners-  when given the name, the laughter initiated when Elizabeth immediately knew to go to the U section of the clothes rack.

From Aaron who worked with Nella at Oakdale "This makes me really very sad.  She was such a nice woman and I was just thinking of her the other day"

So thankful that Nella blessed so very, very many lives.  Thank you Nella for making a difference in the lives of my children.

Sympathies to you that we cannot fully express.  We are praying  for the peace that passes understanding
