Celebrating the life of Ni Dan

June 25, 2013

Late Ni Dan Kicha alias Ayissi, is one of 7 children born into the family of Mr Jacob Ndatu (of late) and Mrs Emilia Ndatu on 06 Dec 1963 in Anong, Batibo Sub Division in the North West Region of Cameroon.  His other siblings include Prudence (late), Sam, Celine (late), Adolf, Rosaline and Patience. Most of his life was spent in Yaoundé, where he gained the name ‘Ayissi’ because he was fully immersed into the Ewondo culture and enjoyed every bit of it. For example, when he went on the floor to dance, he was second to none in Bikutsi, though his life might have seemed short; he lived it to the fullest.

Ni Dan, or uncle Pa Dan, as he is fondly called attended primary school at Ècole Bilingue de Yaounde from 1968-1975 before moving on to College Bilingue de Yaoundé from 1975-1980. After completing his Ordinary Levels at College Bilingue de Yaoundé in 1980 he crossed the ‘Mungo’ to Lycee Bilingue Molyko where he spent two years, 1980-1982 in High School (A/Levels). On gaining is A/Levels, he left for the University of Yaoundé where he spent 3 years,( 1982- 1985)  and graduated with a degree in Law.

The years between 1985 and 2002 were spent either in ‘chumencam’ (job seeking as it is popularly known in Cameroon) or the world of work, mainly between Douala, Yaoundé and Bamenda. His love for education and the study of law in particular prompted him to go back to the University of Yaoundé, 2002- 2004 where he graduated with a Maîtrise’ in law. After graduating he was appointed to the University of Douala where he worked in the Department of Law and political sciences. In 2007 Ni Dan made the journey from Cameroon to the UK and spent the years 2008-9 studying International Law at the University of Buckingham.

Ni Dan had a dynamic, flamboyant and enchanting persona. Besides, he was a peoples’ person, one who made no distinction between young and old. He was a humble and enjoyed being around family and friends etc. He would always go out of his way to help others. He had a genuine love for literature, law and politics and went to great lengths to make even the most difficult articles of law look simple. He enjoyed a debate, had great skills and was extremely logical in his arguments. He used his wit spiced with humour to entice his audience. Ni Dan loved and served his community. From his early years, he served as a scout brigade, was active in his University days in Yaoundé, served as Vice-Chairman of SOCAH – The Society of Cameroonians in Hampshire till his death, worked tirelessly as a member of BIGSEA Constitutional Committee, his Alma matter and the Maghamo Society in the UK, to name just a few.

Ni Dan was a joy to be with and was loved by everyone. He leaves behind a Wife, daughter, Onorine, (19) and a son, Yvan, (8) grand children, his mother, brothers, sisters and many nieces and nephews.

Farewell and rest in perfect peace.
