November 9, 2014

Nilda  Rubiera Zim was born in Santa Fe, Cuba and died on June 24, 2014 in New York City at the age of 77. She was the devoted mother of Eric, Michael and Daniel and the loving grandmother of five grandchildren. She is the daughter of renowned Cuban poet and linguist Ramon Rubiera who also served as editor and publisher of Bohemia, the oldest magazine in Latin America. She excelled as a swimmer and earned a spot on Cuba's Junior Olympic Swimming Team. She lived in New Dehli while she was married to her former husband Marvin Zim who served as Time Magazine's Bureau Chief for South Asia. Around 1977, Nilda left a comfortable suburban life in Short Hills, NJ to pursue a career on Wall Street at a time when the financial industry was dominated by men. She left her mark and shattered the glass ceiling at several New York financial firms including Fahnstock, E.F. Hutton, Prudential Bache and Shearson Lehman American Express. Nilda was also an active participant in the social scene in New York and the Hamptons. She loved learning foreign languages, entertaining guests and was unbeatable at Scrabble and Bridge. Her grace, charm and fun-filled nature will be deeply missed.
