His Life

His Life as I know it

April 6, 2015

My Brother’s Life, where do I start from? Obviously I missed out on a huge chunk of his life because I was born 12 years after him. I have been told of several stories of Bro Dipo babysitting me, the most interesting one is the one of him playing table tennis with me on his back while I slept. My earliest memories of Bro Dipo could possibly be from when we lived in Festac, but then he was in University at the time and I only got to see him when he came home. I do remember that while toasting some babe or the other, he would take me with him and they would say stuff like “your small sister is so fine”…hahahaha.

My Brother, whilst he was a charmer for those babes, he was also very responsible. My parents were so proud of him and still remain proud of him. He finished UniPort with a 2.1 in Accounting, got his first job with PriceWaterhouse, and after then was at Zenith until 2005 when he passed on. People often asked me what my brother did at Zenith Bank, I didn’t know, all I knew was that he was a hardworker and by 1999, I know he was addressed in the office as Yessir and everyone scrambled around when he showed up, “oga don come”.

Most people don’t know this, but Bro Dipo won the US green card lottery in 2000. No, he didn’t move to the US, but he made damn sure his kids got their green card. He would fly me to DC from California every time he came down to the States. No one can ever fill his shoes or take his place in our lives. No one even measures up to the GIANT my brother was.

It is so difficult to find someone that was genuinely caring, loving, funny, inspirational, generous, ambitious, hardworking and respectful, but that was Bro Dipo. Then he married a woman with the biggest heart ever. She was so sweet, and very kind hearted. Also a very good cook, Bro Dipo was skinny for as long as I knew him until he got married. Yeap, Aunty Nky knew the way to his heart.  Bro Dipo as I knew him was the person I ran to when I needed extra money, he was the one that I went to for treats, he was the one we all looked up to. I remember when he was planning his wedding and Daddy was ill and admitted into Eko hospital. Mummy would be at the hospital with him and Bro Dipo was practically in charge of us: Bro Lanre, Sist. Lape and myself.  My mum had no worries then, for the most part, we could all care for ourselves but Bro. Dipo was in charge of us financially. He was the BOSS, and he managed being the BOSS then.  So admirable, I really do wish Yomi had met him. Now that we have our baby boy, he will be told stories of his uncle that he never met, stories that I cherish, stories that I hold on to, stories that will let him know that he can be great and have the grandeur of his late uncle that he never met. I know he would have loved you just as much as I love you. I know this because he loves Bolaji, Wonuola and Laolu.
