"Mr Mbanefo", thats what i called you and you would reply, "ada mbaise". who would ever call me that again. your jokes, smiles and laughter where enough to lift up any one who was feeling low. I would forever hold on to memories of you. When the news of your demise came, the first thing i did was dial your number. Yea, i almost lost it, i couldn't understand why death would come your way this soon. May the Lord give comfort and succor to your wife and kids. I know u are in a better place. Rest on in the bossom of the Lord friend.

Onyekwelu practically arranged my whole wedding ceremony in PH, reception venue, hotels, car hire, DJ, drinks, etc. At a point I felt guilty leaving everything in his hands, but he warned me not to come anywhere near PH until my wedding day.
We were set mates at Command Secondary School Jos (Plateau State) and his bunk in Flying Horse House was two away from mine but since 1989, we have kept a very formidable partnership and try to see each other at least once every year! We were in serious planning for his impending visit to see my newborn child when he got involved in an accident . . .
When I heard he was in intensive care unit, I feared the worst, God forgive me! But I prayed . . . I did, especially as it was all Nwira requested when I asked her what she needed. But u see, my friend Onyekwelu has to be the most restless person in this world, he was too full of life and an unexplainable source of energy! I used to ask him if he swallowed part of superman's kryptonite that fell to earth? It was practically impossible to ask Onye to sit still let alone confine him to a bed.
I was dreaming the day before he passed on and remember teasing him at his bedside and said, shebi this your yansh go siddon one place now? I am not sure, but I think I heard him say "ol'boy no vex but u know say I no fit lie down for this bed like this". Woke up in the morning and got the news. It wasn't a dream, he actually stopped by to bid me goodbye.

Tears welled up my eyes but fear no gree me cry . . . I had an uncanny feeling he was still around my bed and if u know Onye, there's nothing he is incapable of, absolutely nothing . . . Even in the afterlife he may want to try out a new sense of humor and I wasn't quite sure how I'd react. So I will hold my tears, I am holding them still, . . . but it gets harder which each passing day!
Onyekwelu, my brother, my friend, . . . rest in perfect peace!

IKENNA THE VERY BEST OF THE BEST

October 31, 2012

Ikenna the bullet. Ikenna the naked wire.  Ikenna the best of the best. Ikenna my right hand man is gone!

With a heavy heart and tears I announced to all the members of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA that our Membership Director Ikenna Mbanefo has passed on after an auto accident we thought will at the very worst immobilize him temporarily. Even that was difficult to imagine. Our gregarious, wild, loud, funny, boisterous, restless but friendly, loving, caring, sensitive and devoted jolly good friend and brother is gone. We still have no answers to our numerous questions.  We have asked a lot of who, where, when, what, how and why? We may never get any answers and absolutely no answers will suffice or bring Ikenna back to us. So we submit to the supreme will of the Almighty. Without question, the club on the green fields will never be the same.

Shall we ever have laughter? Can we ever take our bus trips with noise and laughter and rib-cracking jokes? Who will announce the arrival of Greenfielders at district events with a style that was characteristic of Ikenna? Will anybody truly love and care like he did? Who will stand at the entrance of this room and make us and our guests feel welcome with the bear hugs, sincere smiles, incessant teasing and “yabbing”, firm grips and handshakes that only Ikenna gave. I don’t have any of these answers but I do know one thing. Ikenna would want us to live on, shine on, laugh harder and excel. He would want us never to have dull moments even without him.

We have decided that his name will live on in Rotary as long as Rotary International lives no matter what it takes. Since the news broke, I have received several anxious calls all praying it is not our Ikenna that is gone or that the news is false. I have received letters, e-mails, calls and text messages of condolence on your behalf from innumerable friends, Rotarians, club presidents, PDGs. PAGs, AGs and the district governor himself DG Buchy.  It is not surprising that our popular Ikenna is perhaps even more popular in death.

The essence of life is to touch lives. Ikenna Mbanefo you touched our lives. You touched the lives of the Street Children in PH. You touched the lives of children who were from low income backgrounds that had impaired vision. You touched the lives of the mentally ill in our society. Because you were not selfish with your life, we became part of you. You will never be forgotten. Sleep well my friend and brother. We are fortunate to have known such a beautiful soul. Thank you for the love we all shared together.
