ForeverMissed

This memorial was created in memory of our loved one, Patricia Ann (Grassel) Rappuhn.

At 93, Patricia passed away while swimming early on November 18, 2020.  While this may sound dreadful to some readers, swimming was Patricia’s absolute favorite activity: one she engaged in every morning if she was near a pool.

Pat’s love of swimming was surpassed only by her volunteer spirit, supporting the Chandler and Sun Lakes communities.  Following her retirement from a nursing career in 1979, she and husband Les Rappuhn moved from Illinois to Sun Lakes in large part due to its early prominence in supporting handicap accessibility, Les having been a paraplegic since WWII.  It was not long before Pat began volunteering at the Chandler Hospital, and was quickly put in charge of the Gift Shop.  Despite her life-long aversion to candy, the gift shop soon became known for selling far more candy than flowers, cards, or patient gifts.  Thousands of hours of volunteer service and many long-standing friendships were the result.

But the gift shop was only the beginning: as a dear friend described her, Pat was “in to everything.”  She was active in church, a moderator of the church board, made phone calls as part of weekly “member care” for church members and newcomers, volunteered at the Ed Robson Library, and a very strong supporter of Neighbors Who Care.  In 2014 she was a recipient of the Crystal Award for service to the community.

Pat was inquisitive … which occasionally came off as “prying,” but she asked “20 questions” because she cared and wanted to help.  People responded because they knew of her nursing background and medical knowledge, and were confident Pat could be trusted with sensitive personal information.

She was an international traveler – not always easy with Les in the wheelchair, but she visited countries throughout Europe, as well as China and Australia.

Married over 50 years, Pat was preceded in death by her husband Leslie Rappuhn, and her dear daughter Beth Ann Snell.  She is survived by her son David, grandchildren Mike Rappuhn, Joshua Rappuhn, Melissa Snell, Sara Heitkam, Morgan Snell, and their families, including eight delightful great-grandchildren as well as one great-great!

Memorial donations may be made to the Sun Lakes United Church of Christ:  25635 S Country Club Dr, Sun Lakes, AZ 85248.  Or if you’re local to Sun Lakes, you could volunteer at “Neighbors Who Care” - https://neighborswhocare.com/

Pat was my Matron of Honor for our wedding in 1957. She was my next door neighbor and our families became very close. In fact, I babysat for you David and your sister. My husband, David and I would go out to Arizona and visit with Les and Pat when possible. We communicate every year around Christmas and talk about our families and things we were doing. She also wrote great letters. I was amazed at all the activities she was part of as the years went by. It has been a privilege to have her in our life.

We truly lost a pillar of the church as well as the Renaissance where Pat resided. I think of her daily. We must continue her work on earth as a Shepard. Pat will be our angel guide. Edla Berggreen

In 2005 we visited Sun Lakes and worshiped at SL United Church of Christ. The first person to welcome us to the service was your loved one, Pat Rappuhn. She made us feel welcome, told us she was from Illinois, and encouraged us to return again. Through the years we became good friends and have remained so...it is with heavy hearts that we learned of her passing. She was such an integral part of the life of Sun Lakes UCC as well as our own lives. We are thankful that you have shared her life with so many of us. Thanks be to God for the life of Pat Rappuhn.

Oh how Pat will be missed! She was the glue that has kept us together during this pandemic by calling regularly to check on us. She ran a tight ship while head usher (in a good way) and never missed a Sunday. It will be difficult to fill her shoes, My sincere sympathy to David and all her family.

We were so shocked and saddened to learn of Pat's death. We had returned home from Tucson and we saw that Pat had called during that time. I called her Monday and we had a very long chat and discussed 'getting rid of stuff'. She said she had taken care of a lot of that so as not to burden the kids. We also did the same before moving here in 2014. I think I will always remember her kindness, her directness..."Be sure to give me those Usher/Greeter nametags" (!), and her volunteerism. I can only echo the sentiments of those tributes above: all so very true. Our condolences to David and the family. Dave and Lettie Harrald, SLUCC

So sorry to hear of Pat's passing. It was quite a shock to all of us. To me, Pat was like the Energizer Bunny, she just kept going, and going, and going...And I thought she would keep going. She worked tirelessly for SLUCC and its congregation. Pat was so loved by all of us, and she was one of the most caring people I have had the pleasure to know. Pat will be sorely missed. I'm very proud to have known her.  Her family has my deepest sympathy.

Extremely saddened by the news of Pat's passing. That said, what an incredible life of service she led. I was blessed to have many phone calls and conversations with her over the last few years. Pat was one of the first people to welcome me and my family to SLUCC. My son, Andrew, LOVED Pat and asked about her regularly. I believe the feeling was mutual between the two of them. I take comfort in knowing that at the time of her passing, she was doing something that she so loved. My thoughts and prayers go out to Pat's family and friends. What an AMAZING Lady! I will definitely miss Pat and her kind soul.

We grew to know Pat when I joined SLUCC in October of 2014. She always welcomed me with a hug and a how are you doing today. When my husband was disabled in 2015 and spent 5 weeks in the hospital, Pat called every week to check on us. She kindly listened to me as I navigated my husband's recovery. So often I cried on her shoulder and she reassured me things would be alright. When Phillip (my husband) was able to attend church again, it was Pat who welcomed us back. When it was time to move out of state, Pat rejoiced that we would be near family again, and I would get the much needed support to continue healing. Pat was so very special to me and Phil. Even after our move to Kansas, she called to check on us. I cherish those calls and her memory. Our deepest sympathy to David and the entire Rappuhn family.

Wow - how do you describe this lovely lady? I just talked to her last Monday. She called to check on us and let us know why she was not in church last Sat. She was one of the most dedicated, hard working Christians that I know - she didn't just talk the talk, she walked the walk every day. We will miss her more than words can say. To her family: you have been so blessed to have her in your life. (So were we), Dwaine and Marlene Hinkle

Memorial Service for Patricia Rappuhn

February 10, 2021
The Memorial for Patricia will be held on Monday morning February 22 at 9:30.  The service will be at the Sun Lakes Chapel (Phase 1): 9240 E. Sun Lakes Blvd, across from the Phase 1 clubhouse.
And this is a little awkward: Due to COVID, seating will be very limited to only 50 people.  So as much as I'd love to have everyone join us, I simply ask that for those desiring to come, please help keep our total audience within that boundary of 50 for social distancing.
If you'd like to hang around for a few minutes afterward, there will be light food and fellowship.  Personally, I would love to meet you.
Dave Rappuhn (Pat's son)

Invincible!

November 21, 2020
I have only known Pat for three years through our UCC association. From the start, Pat and I hit it off with shared histories of operating rooms, hospitals, and North Dakota. I was privileged early on to share a hug each time we met. It was me collecting my hug from her. Lately, we’ve been commiserating about how hard it is to live without hugs and how glad we will be to hug again. I will miss her so! She was a wonderful role model, full of kindness and concern, with a rascally wit, too. Rest In Peace, Pat, knowing the world is a better place because of you!
