Always happy to be there for the family

February 7, 2016

Ever since Pat came into our lives and family he has been a more than willing participant at all of the family celebrations. He has worn pink tye-dye, rainbow colored tye-dye, cowboy gear, pink Easter Bunny ears, and anything else his grandchildren and great grandchildren asked him to wear. Even when he didn't feel well, Pat came to birthday parties and holiday celebrations. He made us all feel special, important, and loved.  We miss Pat dearly, and his constant presence will continue to be missed for many years to come.

Desolation Sound 2000

February 4, 2016

Three months of glorious bliss.  Started the trip with George & Maryann Johnson who actually introduced Pat to me.  They have joined us on many cruises and I learned so much from them about oysters, crab, shrimp etc.  After a week or so with them, our children from Virginia drove up to Lund where we picked them up for another week in Desolation Sound and the Johnsons' drove my car back to Seattle.  It was so fun enjoying all the sun and warm waters with daughter Rae Ann and her family.  Gary's son Dennis joined us too. So there was Rae Ann, Gary, Dennis and their daughters Jenny and Kathy.  So so much fun sharing with them the fun of boating.  Lots of hiking, swimming.  Always wanted to jump off our own boat into waters warm enough for swimming.  Not like the chill of Puget Sound.  It was an amazing week and then they flew back to Seattle.  Pat & I met up with many DMYC members, rafting up, sharing stories and many dinners with good friends.  We were gone three months and every day was as warm, sunny and very special as the next.

Memories of Pat from Gary Smith

February 3, 2016

I have many memories of Pat. We first met in the Fall of 1954 when we began High School in Willamiina.  We were good friends during the two years he was there. Sometime between the sophomore and junior years his family moved to Sheridan but by this time we were old enough to drive cars so we were able to maintain our friendship.  I spent many a night at his house where we played chess and ran around doing stupid stuff like immature teenage guys do.  We had a lot of good times together.  In the Fall of our senior years he introduced me to my first wife.  I have forgiven him for that (ha). After we graduated we joined the Air Force together and spent the first five weeks of basic training together.  I have really good memories of those five weeks as some really humorous things happened to us. After this our lives went in different directions.  One of my fond memories is of the boat ride you two took us on to Seattle.  So I continue to think of Pat a lot.  He was a part of the good times you always look back on.  Gary

Sienna's Birthday at the Farm

February 3, 2016

What a great day this was.  Sienna was off feeding each and every animal there was.  She was fearless.  The rest of this motly group got into it too.  What wonderful memories for all of us.  This is Grandpa with the Nelson boys, Tom, Jeff & Autumn

Thanksgiving

February 2, 2016

Thanksgiving at the Taylors'...... What a 'special time' and what a 'Special Family Gathering.  Pat was always so very excited to see everyone and be a part of this wonderful Thanksgiving Celebration.  Got bigger every year.  He truly missed it this year.

We did not get to see Grandpa Pat very often, but he stayed with us in our thoughts throughout the year…especially during football season or any major political periods.  We seem to discuss the events in terms of Pat’s happiness or discontent…Every time the Seahawks have played for the last ten or so years the results have been reported to me by Chris saying “Well your Grandpa Pat is going to be happy today…the Seahawks won!”  or often times, “Pat’s not gonna be happy today, the Seahawks got their butts kicked by…..”

For about the same amount of years we have always discussed politics in terms of Pat’s discontent…”Oh boy did you hear about that situation…I bet Grandpa Pat is fit to be tied….”  It makes me laugh to think of all the times that Grandma Jeanne would figuratively “kick Pat under the table” for sharing thoughts that are not considered “politically correct” by today’s standards.  I love that Pat is who he was and not going to be swayed by what others thought he should think or say…I will always admire that about him.

I also love the memories of Pat in the kitchen, Pat loved his food and good too…not this new age healthy stuff.  Each year we all gather at Dad and Rae Ann’s for Thanksgiving Week and the basic philosophy of the house for breakfast and lunch is; if you are hungry find it and fix it…every man for himself.  Well that means cereal and granola bars or muffins mostly for breakfast for most of the house…usually around day three of this I could always tell Pat had had enough and it was time for a “real breakfast”.  He would nearly clean out the refrigerator of the eggs, bacon, cheese, butter, sausage…and whatever else he could find to cook for everyone and he would keep cooking til everyone was full!  Even those these breakfasts had stopped over the last couple of years Pat still managed to make his awesome cornbread for Thanksgiving Dinner each year.

I love his laugh that fills a room and the fact that he always seemed to know everything about history…which if you’ve ever been to a museum with him you would know, that it is no quick process, he reads EVERYTHING!   We love Pat and he will be greatly missed, but I know he will always stay with us in our thoughts…”Hey honey, Pat is smiling down from heaven today…Seahawks won!”

Pat had the greatest smile and used it often.  I remember in 2008 on the Poulsbo cruise in February finding an Obama shirt in town and wearing it to dinner that night just to give Pat (and others) a hard time.  He was good natured about it.

I also remember making my first bread pudding on the same cruise and finding out how much Pat loved bread pudding.  I made it again for a bake sale and made sure he knew about it and bought it.  He was always appreciative of anything I cooked.

I hadn't realized how much he enjoyed cooking until after my husband, Darrel, died and Pat (and Jeanne) came to help cook for the Soup Night memorial at the club.  He was a great help using the food processor for the vegetables.

Another fond memory was a time on the back of the Miss D'lite with a tower of crab and talking and cracking crab together.  He always had a smile and a hug for me, which is what I will remember, and miss, most.  Happy Boating, Pat.
