His Life

A Brief History

April 6, 2016

Paul Edward Lohse, retired Systems Manager with Bank of America has died on March 29, 2016, after a long bout with frontotemporal dementia.

Mr. Lohse was born to Edward Lohse and Mildred Edna Hofmeister in Queens, New York .  He graduated as one of the top four students from Conestoga High School in 1963 and then attended Wheaton College, graduating summa cum laude in 1966, with a BA in Ancient Greek.

After college, Mr. Lohse briefly studied at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia .  He also worked in the linguistics department at University of Pennsylvania for a short period before he started working with his father at Burroughs Corporation, applying his linguistic knowledge to early computer programming.  His computer programming savvy quickly led him to a job with Chase Manhattan Bank and then Bank of America.  He retired from Bank of America after 21 years of work in systems. When he retired he was regarded as a legend in the field of computer programming, but more importantly, Mr. Lohse was regarded as one of the best managers, always putting his team before any project.

Mr. Lohse had a deep love of the English language and history; he relished finding witty and incisive methods of imparting his knowledge to his children, family and co-workers. He often would send clipped newspaper articles with highlighted passages to his children.  His other interests included travel, food and wine, early music, and most importantly, the San Francisco Giants.

He is survived by this two former wives, Tup Bertley and Susan DaSilva, his children Kim, Adrian, Wendy and his grandchildren Sarah, Kroy and Erik.

If you would like to honor his memory cheer for the Giants, raise a glass of vintage port and enliven someone’s day with a truly awful pun.
