Nebraska State Patrol Career

In the spring of 1958 he was selected by the Nebraska State Patrol to attend their basic training camp located at Camp Ashland, NE. January of 1959 Ray and Norma with their two small children, Linda and Randy, moved from Lincoln to Omaha, he was appointed to the Nebraska Safety Patrol as a trooper (Badge Number 164) assigned to Troop A Omaha, NE. 5 months later in June of 1959 he was transferred to Lyons, NE, Sub Troop A Fremont NE, working with Dale Ruppert. They were responsible for the Winnebago and Omaha Indian Reservations and 5 counties. They worked 10 hour shifts, six days a week. Salary was $350.00 per month.
October 1959 Ray and his family were transferred to Oakland, NE. While living in Oakland, Ray covered many fatal accidents, several murders, he worked every strike at IBP in Dakota City, NE and covered the 1964 riots in Omaha. In 1966 he provided security in Lincoln and at the Governor's Mansion for President Lyndon B. Johnson's wife, Lady Bird Johnson.
Ray was promoted to rank of Sergeant in 1970 and transferred to Troop B, Norfolk, NE with his wife and 5 children. He worked one week nights the next week days, on Wednesday night's he was the only trooper working traffic in a 9 county area.
Raymond received many promotions working for the State Patrol: 1982 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, working as a field traffic Lieutenant for Troop B, responsible for traffic enforcement in a 23 country area. 1984 Raymond was promoted to Captain and commander of Troop B, during his watch a new system was implemented where all other divisions were the responsibility of the Troop Commander. Such as Drug Division, Criminal Division, Communications, Safety Division, Secretary, Janitors and Carrier Enforcement. After 30 years on the Nebraska State Patrol Ray retired in 1988, he had a total of 85 personnel in 23 counties under his command.

December of 1955 Ray married his best friend Norma Jean Stover at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alma, NE. After a honeymoon in Colorado they moved to Lincoln, NE. Ray went to work as a truck driver for Gamble and Robinson-Snowboy Fruit and Vegetable Company. To this union 5 children were born: Linda, Randy, Rhonda, Mike and Wanda.

Army Career

Ray entered into the United States Army on October 26, 1953. He took basic training at Fort Ord, California, following basics he was sent overseas. He was sent over to Europe on a troop ship by the name of General Morris Rose. Raymond was assigned to the 41st Transportation Company in Kaiserslautern, Germany. In the fall of 1954 Ray tried out for the 37 THTD Wheelers basketball team in Mannheim, Germany. He was one of ten people selected to play on the Division team. They played in 81 games of which they lost 7. They played in 26 different countries. Raymond was discharged from the Army on October 26, 1955 with the rank of Spec 4.

Early years

Raymond L. Brown was born on January 17, 1934 at his farm home, two miles west of Riverton, NE. The third child of Roy and Jennie Brown. His siblings are Merl (deceased), Gene of Monticello IA, Maxine and her husband Merv of Lincoln, NE.

In 1939 his folks sold out their farm equipment and bought a tavern in Naponee, NE. Ray spent first grade in a country school located about half way between Riverton and Franklin, NE. He entered second grade at Naponee in the fall of 1940. Raymond graduated salutatorian of his class from Naponee High School on May 14, 1951. After graduation he was employed by Ammand Sand and Gravel as a dump truck driver, at which time he purchased a new 1951 Ford car.
