Richard N. Gilbert

MADISON – Richard N. Gilbert, 73, of Madison died Friday, February 4th. Richard was born in Madison, to Arthur and Alice (Foss) Gilbert, on April 29, 1937.

A 1956 graduate of Madison High School, Richard married Nancy L. Arsenault of Madison on September 14, 1957. Richard served in the U.S. Air Force immediately after High School and was stationed in South Dakota where he and Nancy began their family.  Richard worked in the Bingham and Madison areas for most of his life, retiring as a millwright from Madison Paper Industries.

Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and working in his shop making custom furniture. Richard was always quick with a joke and enjoyed time spent with family and friends, both in Madison and at his campsite on Sebago Lake. He was always ready to lend a hand and could often be found, tools in hand, working on a project for a friend.

Richard has joined his wife Nancy, his two sons, Richard and Ronald, and his mother Alice and father Arthur in heaven.  He is survived by his two sisters, Joyce Sawyer and Noreen and husband Doug Murray of Madison; son David and his children Brigette and Garret, son Marc and wife Corina of Mercer and their children Brett, Brooke and Paige, daughter-in-law Jan of Melbourne, FL and her sons Marc and Ronald; his nieces Karen Griffin of MA, Kathy Falbo of Fairfield, Kelly and husband Randy Belanger, Michael and wife Kelly Whalen, Jeffrey Murray, Gregory and wife Wendy Murray of Madison, nieces Stephanie Duprey of Waterville and Kim Waldron of NC, nephew Blaine Arsenault, of UT; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.  Richard will be sadly missed by close, lifelong friend Leo and wife Cathi Veilleux, as well as many, many special friends, all of whom meant a great deal to him.

The family wishes to thank those who cared for Richard and truly made a positive impact on the last few years of his life including Sharon Trafton, the staff at Maplecrest Nursing Home and hospice care.

A memorial mass and celebration of Richard’s life will be held at St. Sebastian Rasle church in Madison on Friday, February 11th at 10:00am. Interment to be held in the spring.
