His Life
June 9, 2016

Richard was born in 1935 to Orrin Walling and Mary Moore in Omaha, Nebraska. At a young age he moved with his parents to Compton, California. There, his parents purchased land and built a home. Richard attended Compton schools becoming involved in, among others things, sports. Basketball, football, and baseball were his favorites, and he truly excelled in baseball.  At 13, he was the captain of his American Legion team. Later, at Compton College, he was MVP of the Western States Conference. His love for baseball continued while serving in the US Army at Fort Richardson, Alaska where he was part of an All-Star team.
Richard was brought up in a household that emphasized a strong work ethic and perserverance. At a young age, he worked a paper route with the LA Times and continued to work steady throughout high school. With an interest in engineering, he secured his dream job at 18. He was hired at North American Aviation, later called Rockwell. He worked at Rockwell for 37 years, contributing to work on the Apollo moon landing program, smart bombs, the F-111 fighter jet and Hubble Telescope Satellite.
It was during the early years of his career that he married Pat Parker and had four children. Active in family life, continuing his education at local colleges and working, he then retired, at 55. However with a move to Las Vegas, he decided not retire. Instead he took a job with EG&G. For 2 years he flew to and from work, near Area 51. He contributed to work on classified projects involving weaponry. Afterward, he volunteered at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department where he logged a whopping 8,000 hours.
Richard spent his most recent years staying active and involved. He traveled, went to the gym, casinos, movies and enjoyed eating out. He worked on the computer often and stayed current with politics. He believed in working hard and contributing to the common good and giving back to the community. He loved his family and kept in touch often.
Richard is survived by his sister Sharon Laing, her children Mike, Scott and Jeff Laing, their spouses and children, and by his children Lore Schaefer, David Walling,Tim Walling and Kim Oines, their spouses, children and grandchildren.
A private memorial will be held in Laguna Beach, California on July 9, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Military Family Association or the Fisher House Foundation.
