I was always enamored of Neetze (forgive spelling) and always wanting to know more about Dick; always planning to visit them in Florida; always missing a chance. Jan and I wish we had achieved this small goal. But now all we can offer is prayers for all of the Gappen family. We never got to Plantation, but we are with you, as is God, Terry & Jan Kester

We didn't know Dick and Anita, however we were well acquainted with Rick and Selene. They shared with us many exciting stories about Dick and it was evident the love and positive influence that he had on his family and everyone that knew him. Our deepest sympathies go out to Gappen family.

Dick Gappen was an incredibly active and fun-loving individual. On scuba trips with Rick and Selene, Dick would haul an air tank that seemed two times bigger than ours, with ease. And he was a joy on such trips, always positive and energetic. Dick will be missed.

He was a terrific neighbor and friend to both Carol and me. He and Anita were always gracious. Every morning as I drove to work, I would run into Dick getting the paper and we'd spend a few minutes catching up on what was new. He shared his illness with me and discussed his feelings about not being able to be as active as he wanted to be. We will miss his smile and kindness. I recall whenever he and Anita would go to the Senior Programs around the country how much they would look forward to them.  May he rest in peace.

We met Dick and Anita in 1994 after moving to our new home in Buckhead in Plantation Acres. We were so fortunate to have them as neighbors!!! Dick and I worked together for many years as the representatives of our Buckhead Homeowners Association. His skills as a businessman made him a great president and leader.  I will always remember the wonderful black labs that he and Anita had. His love and devotion to animals was shared by them both and eventually they adopted kitties instead. He was always upbeat and positive and just an all around great guy!! I will miss seeing him and stopping to say hello as I would pass by. Carol Savitz

I recall what wonderful hosts Dick and Anita were to me when visiting Flordia with Rick and Selene.  Dick was an incredible influence on all of us.  His adventurous spirit, his entrepreneurial focus and his independence of thought. I in particular recall the lobster prowess :).  I know he and Rick have always been close and best friends as well as father and son.  The mutual respect they had for one another was truly inspiring.

I am sorry to hear of Dick's passing, and happy to have been able to know him.

The entire Gappen family is in my prayers as you celebrate the incredible life story.

Annette Clayton
