Robert's Life

June 16, 2011

Robert Roy Argo, resident of Elk Grove for 41 years, active community volunteer and avid poker player, died Saturday, June 4, at the age of 81.

Born April 22, 1930, in Casper, Wyoming, his life was defined by passion for education, veterans affairs, community volunteerism, and poker. He was USAF in England during the Korean War. Upon graduating from University of Wyoming, Robert and his wife, Jane, moved to Sacramento in 1960 and then to Elk Grove in 1972. He spent most of his 36-year education career as counselor at American Legion High School.

In retirement, Bob was dedicated to community service. He served on Sacramento County Grand Jury for two years. Cultivating his love of travel, he was an election observer in Kosovo, Bosnia, and the Ukraine. He was an active member of the AmVets Post #1 and served on the board of the Veterans Community Support Network, participating annually in AmVets Stand Down. He served on the Scottish Rite Childhood Learning Center board, the scholarship committee, and was the public schools liaison.

A fifth generation Freemason, Mr. Argo, a 32-degree KCCH, was Past Worshipful Master of Union Kit Carson Lodge No. 58 and Past Wise Master of Sacramento Chapter Rose Croix of Scottish Rite. In 1991 he was invested with the rank and decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor.

A lifelong poker player, he subsidized his misspent youth and well-spent adulthood playing cards. He leaves behind countless cherished friends with whom he shared his zest for life, poker, and conversation.

He is survived by Jane, his wife and travel partner of 51 years, his sons Richard Durham, Clayton (JT), Brian (Nancy), John (Mary), and daughter Beth Ruthven (Brian), and beloved grandchildren Erik Argo, Zachary and Katie Argo, Brandon, Connor, and Ailidh Ruthven, and Jeanette,  Ashley, and Whitney Durham.

Services will be held at United Methodist Church in Elk Grove on Saturday the 18th of June at 1:00 pm.  Reception immediately following.

Remembrances may be sent to the Sacramento Scottish Rite Children’s Language Center or Shriners Hospital for Children.
