Robert attended Johns Creek Baptist Church and was an insurance adjuster with Crawford and Company and commercial insurance salesman with F. M. Global after graduating from Auburn University.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carole Bone Smith; his daughters, Lisa Fordham and Virginia “Ginny” Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Benjamin and Mary Bennie Tidwell Smith.
