Mr. Brown & MLK

January 12, 2015
When Walter first entered the nursing home in Atlanta, his roommate was Mr. Brown. Mr. Brown was a former judge, among other things.   "Back in the day" Mrs. Brown was sought after by Martin Luther King. (He was known to be a skirt chaser).   One night Mr. brown came to see her and found Martin there, outside her home.  Mr. Brown chased Martin down the street.
At the nursing home the two of them played some serious checkers (I bought the set).  I don't know.  Walter was known to be an outstanding chess player going back to High School days - but both said they let the other win at checkers.   This past year Walter was afraid to check on Mr Brown who was back living at home. Walter wanted to visit with him in 2012 but at the time there was no way for us to get them physically together. Walter sat in the car in the driveway.  I went inside to speak with Mr. Brown and gave him a kiss on the cheek from Walter.   If Mr. Brown has passed I'm sure there are some mighty Checker games in Heaven.

Columcille Megalith Park

January 7, 2015

Columcille Megalith Park, Bangor, PA, was one of Walter's most loved places. He would often go there for runs and walks, and spend conteplative time in the "chapel".  It has simularities to Stone Heng.  I'm including photos on this site.  I would like to visit there one day.

Here is background information from the website:

Columcille, Inc. is a nonprofit organization established in 1978 to promote transformation through inner and outer work. It has its origins in Casa Colum(Gaelic for Home of the Dove), a small house opened in 1975 by William Cohea Jr.as a ‘salon by the side of the road’ where ‘tired sinners and reluctant saints’ could drop by and share their experiences and ideas. Cohea had been inspired during a visit to the Isle of Iona to create an open space which welcomed people of all faiths and traditions interested in renewal and transformation.

In partnership with Fred Lindkvist and "Friends of Columcille," the original foundation grew and Columcille erected the St. Columba Chapel in 1979. The building took its name from Colum Cille, the 6th century Irish monk who founded a monastic community on Iona.

Religion

November 10, 2014

Some have mentioned religion as related to Walter (Ron). At a point he really did think he'd become a minister. Southern Baptist most likely as that is how he was raised.

From his church as a young man he ran a program for young kids. At first a few came but as word spread so many more (belonging to the church or not) came. I can imagine - he was a Cool Guy!  He saw the great needs -shoes in particular (consider rural, poor, south).

He would often sell off his few possessions to buy things for these kids.

At one point he went to the church minister and asked for help to enlist donations for these kids. Hey - how much does it cost to ask for donations?!  He was told that instead donations were to be spent on an elevator to help the elderly up to the second (3rd?) floor for their events - - - even though they could have done these on the ground level.  This started to make W. think about the church's priorities. It hit him hard. What is the church's purpose?

Later, in college, Walter took classes in religion. He even learned to read the original biblical texts and found that so many translations into today's bibles are wrong. For example, the original text said that a young woman became pregnant . . .  It did Not say a virgin.  But along the way someone (not understanding the original language very well - and perhaps wanting to be gracious) decided that a young woman must have been a virgin.  Next thing we know we have "immaculate conception". This is just one of many errors and discretions that Walter learned from the original texts.

He asked his professor, a practicing minister, if you know this, how can you continue to tell people the distorted stories?  The professor essentially said that's what they expect.

Over the years if the topic came up Walter was always very careful to say "I don't want to hurt your beliefs" and asked first if they wanted to hear.  Some did. Some didn't. He obliged.

Please don’t misunderstand. There is a difference between today’s "formal religions"; their practices and teachings, including those within “Christianity” - versus. the true text and teachings.

Walter understood God and the truth of God, and I know he is with Him now.

Hello Madeline.   Walter spoke of you and Lanny. He said Lanny would leave the light on outside your home to let W know he was up and so W would come by at night. He told me about this several times so know that it was so very important and comforting to him.   On Tuesday, September 16, 2014 11:13 AM, Madeline Brabham wrote:

Hello Linda, I am Madeline Brabham, my husband was Lanny, who grew up in 96 with his grandparents.  We moved to 96 in 1976 across the street from Zeke and his mother Jeannette Harter. At that time I dont remember if there was a man in the house,  he became friends with Lanny and visited with us almost daily.  I watched him mature into a young man. He had many friends in high school and a challenging home life, Jeanette was from a very country family, and never changed, but loved Zeke and provided a home for him. He would talk to Lanny for hours, who was a great mentor and a good listener.  Zeke would ask for advise about life.  He started to Lander University and did very well, played chess and was very good.  Practiced his Karate outside.  At one time he took religion very serious and I thought he was going to pursue  it as a career. He did not have many material things growing up but seemed happy and well adjusted. On his last visit to Greenwood he called me, I had lunch with him and his family. Lanny died in 1995 @ age 54, Zeke was unable to come to his funeral but wanted to visit the cemetery and say his good byes.    We tried to keep in contact with him over the years, they were very close. I am sorry but dont think I have any pictures of him. So sorry for your lose and would have visited him if I had known he was ill. He is a part  of my fond memories from 96.  He was blessed to have your love and to be with him during his difficult illness. I will ask some of the neighbors that lived there at that time if they have pics. I know this is a difficult time for you, do you have family for support and do you have contact with Zeke's daughter? Glad you are my facebook friend.  Keep in contact.

Billy Joel

August 20, 2014

Billy Joel. It's not just that Walter loved Joel's music . . . here's the story.
While first attending Lander University in Greenwood, SC, he planned to be a Psych major.  One of his favorite professors often mentioned that her husband had been friends with Billy Joel since childhood. Walter would laugh - "ah, sure he is -ha ha - sure".

Then one day this professor and her husband invited Walter for dinner. He accepted, arrived, and when he entered their home . . . !!!  sure enough - there was Billy Joel!  They all had dinner and chatted.  Then Billy went to the piano and played and sang some of his music.

Cool!

Walter especially liked his "Glass Houses" album.

Jazz & Miles Davis

August 20, 2014

If your computer's speakers are not muted you're probably listening to some of Walter's favorite music. He loved jazz and the album "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis was a favorite. Along with Joel, selections are playing here.

Enjoy!
