"Signs of Jesus soon coming are fast fulfilling. Let’s be ready to meet our friend Jesus." -- Rose Stickle in letter on October 25

This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Rose Stickle, 76, born on June 14, 1939 and went to sleep in Jesus on November 23, 2015. We will see her soon, in the morning.  "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God.  And the dead in Christ will rise first...."

"Today I have been sorting pictures from 2011, 2012, and 2013 and I came upon a directory with all the pictures off Mom's camera at that time. I enjoyed the trip in time and seeing your travels. I really enjoyed the pictures upon pictures of flowers that you loved to share!"

"I can hardly fathom it being one year ago today that I, with Rose's immediate family and sister Sue, stood beside her bed and watched her breathe her last.  That was precious though.  Her battle with cancer was over after almost a five year span.  She was so gracious and accepting of her lot.  Always tried to be so upbeat.  Now the challenge for us who live on is to replicate her example--a very caring person--always ready to help and give a lending hand.  You can be proud of your wife, mother, grandmother and sibling.  We are reassured we will meet Rose that Glad Morning.  Let's be certain we WILL be there to greet her."

"The florist reminded me that it was time to send flowers for your birthday. But i didn't need that reminder, i already knew. From years in Gulshan, Mirpoor and New York where we would sneak into the kitchen and try to do what you did for us so many other days of the year, make breakfast in bed. You served us and so many others from the moment you woke until you drifted into exhausted sleep each night. And retirement didn't make much difference as i still could not keep up with you. The borscht we ate yesterday was full of Swiss Chard - a gift from your garden. Beauty, every time we see flowers we think of you, or when we hear music we think of you. Music, i can't sing or play without picturing the early years where i would longingly watch your fingers fly over the keyboard dreaming of being able to play like you one day, the joy we shared when i learned those songs, and the years of encouragement from you, the choir practices where i tagged along with you as a little kids when you let me sing though others discouraged a child's voice, learning how to harmonize, the kids musicals, the adult musicals, encouraging others to sing as i learned from you. And it has been your love for beauty - in nature, in music, in the people around you that pointed us to look up to Jesus, the most beautiful Rose of Sharon, Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star, the One who loves me, me, me. Even while i write to you, i know you are sleeping, but i know it won't be long until you hear music again. Glorious music! And i dream of songs of joy in fields of flowers..."

"Portland is having an early spring with sunshine and temperatures into the 60's (Fahrenheit). Spring flowers are springing up everywhere. Each time I see one/some I want to share it with Mom! ...A myriad of many colored crocuses in front of one house, an unknown tree blossoming a delicate pink, white ground cover creeping from the flower bed into my lawn, and a daphne shrub scenting the entryway at the girls' high school. I haven't gotten out to garden yet except for trimming two roses by the side of our house. One was starting to get yellow leaves and I wanted it all gone before the spring growth came in earnest. --Barbara Hall on Facebook"

"O Shepherd divine, I know Thou art mine - Mom chose this song to sing on Sabbath November 7, 2015  and we enjoyed practicing together on Friday night even though she didn't feel well enough to sing it with Aunt Sue and i on Sabbath. I was able to sing it again on April 15, 2016 in honor of Mom and to go with the sermon for Khmer New Years:

O Shepherd divine, I know Thou art mine;
Thy search in the night was for me.
This bleak world is cold, but warm is Thy fold;
My Shepherd, I follow Thee.
Thy beautiful lamp shineth bright o’er my way,
Thy glorious light unto Thy perfect day.
Thro’ pastures serene,
Thro’ valleys of green,
My Shepherd, I follow Thee.

O Shepherd divine, I know Thou art mine;
Thy great heart was broken for me.
Thy grace and Thy law I picture in awe;
They kissed upon Calvary.
Ah! Life that was given to ransom my soul,
Ah! Heart that was broken to make sinners whole,
This world is but loss
In view of Thy cross,
My Shepherd, I follow Thee.

O Shepherd divine, I know Thou art mine;
I hear Thee say, “Follow thou me.
Thy message today illumines my way;
The Spirit of Prophecy.
I thrill at Thy marvellous love to Thy sheep,
The way Thou dost lead to the still waters deep,
One staff and one rod,
One fold and one God;
My Shepherd, I follow Thee

"This picture reminds me of my past and about a God fearing mother, devoted mother, loving and caring mother whose commitment was to show how Jesus lived on this earth and loved people unconditionally. Because this mother many got education and came to know Jesus. I am sure we are going to meet her in heaven soon. -- Simon Ghoroza"

"In honor of my sweet mom, Rose Stickle , the loveliest of roses, who believed this quote and passed it on to us: “'God is love' is written upon every opening bud, upon every spire of springing grass. The lovely birds making the air vocal with their happy songs, the delicately tinted flowers in their perfection perfuming the air, the lofty trees of the forest with their rich foliage of living green—all testify to the tender, fatherly care of our God and to His desire to make His children happy." ~ Steps to Christ, p. 10" -- Susan's Facebook page"

"From Beryl Joe on Facebook:

Let me be like the dying rose,
Beautiful yet fragile.
Aware of my days numbered,
Yet for the day when I am numbered,
And counted among the living,
Let me blossom with a hand of giving,
A mind of learning,
A heart of forgiving
As I receive from the Root of Jesse,
My well meaning life in Jesus;
Lived to blossom while life shall last here now,
And beyond this life to the bosom of The Life,
Of the Father above. --Beryl Joe

My mentor and mother in Missions, has gone to sleep. As I took a walk in the neighborhood yesterday, and landed on a totally new path, I saw a Rose Avenue, filled with flowers, and I remembered my friend Rose Stickle, and her love for flowers.

She's sleeping now. She taught Joe and I a lot on serving the Lord in foreign countries, and I will meet Rose again, SOON."

"From Ria de Kock in the FAMA newsletter - April 2016
If love and doing everything the eight doctors prescribed cheerfully, and then some, our dearest Rose should not have died! But in the end she succumbed and is awaiting the call of the Life-giver. What a magnificent life!
Somehow we started getting the FAMA newsletter, though we really were missionaries from Africa working for the black indigenous people of Africa from early in the 1980s. We first met Rose personally at the FAMA meeting held in Keene during 2012, and though ours was not a long association, her death left us feeling very painfully bereft.

Shortly after our first meeting at Keene, Edwin and I flew up to Amazing Discoveries in November 2012. Among other things, they recorded an advertisement of Edwin’s book on prophecy, The Truth About 666 and the Story of the Great Apostasy, plus some material for Enmity, the new series AD was making with Dr. Walter Veith. Lo and behold, Herb and Rose arrived towards evening with a warm cooked meal for four! She had become a friend for life and we the recipients of her frequent loving and chatty letters.

By the time we went up to AD again in May 2014, Herb and Rose had arranged for us to see their paradise home on Vancouver Island. They met us at the ferry, took us to see Butchart Gardens, which I had dreamed of seeing for a long time. First Rose fed us a picnic lunch under the gorgeous trees, and then Rose and I took pictures. Eventually Edwin, due to his leaking heart valve, became too tired to walk the steep trails. Herb cheerfully fetched a wheelchair and pushed Edwin around for a while! That night we slept in their cozy and hospitable home under the quilts that Herb’s mother, also a missionary, had made. Next day, we inspected their newly laid out vegetable garden, surrounded by the apple and other fruit trees they hoped to harvest in a number of years’ time. We then visited their famous Victorian museum and picnicked in a park once more. Rose had a cardboard box with everything necessary for a picnic neatly in its place, and the right, nourishing food, ending with nuts. Yummy! When our too short visit ended, they made sure we were on the right ferry back to Amazing Discoveries, Vancouver, from where we eventually took a red-eye flight back to Texas.

In all the time spent with Herb and Rose, we never got the impression of a woman desperately fighting for her life. She never mentioned pain, fear, or weariness in all our association together, nor even in her later letters. She was always bubbling over with joy in God’s creation great and small, sending pictures, telling of the tasty food she and her many visitors were preparing for Sabbath or the freezer, and how good God was to them. She and Herb were to us the embodiment of what a Christian should be like: totally humble, loving, giving of themselves without hesitation or hoping for a reward. She instinctively knew what was needed and supplied it!

A special photo she sent about a year ago was one of her and her siblings sitting together in the very pew they occupied as children in their home town. Does anybody perhaps have it saved on their computer? We would love a copy of it, please.

What we loved was how Rose and her twin sister sang together in their little church the very last Sabbath she was able to attend the Parksville Church. She was also planning to house the family for Thanksgiving! Edwin and I admire Herb for staying on to nurture that small church in spite of his loneliness. We look forward with him and their children to seeing Rose again soon.

Rose made FAMA the wonderful newsletter it was and we pray somebody will keep up that good work.

Edwin and Ria de Kock,"

"From Leon & Dorothy Powrie - Dear Herb, Susan, Edwin, Barbara Anne Marie, Jane and families,
Dorothy and I are saddened on receiving the news of Rose's passing. From her e-mails we were aware that she has had a long battle. We have fond memories of our time together with you all in Bangladesh. Rose's bubbly personality and happy disposition was so refreshing. She was a model mum and we appreciated her dedication and friendship.
We share in your grief but look with anticipation to that glorious day when we will be united again in worship and service to He who is the resurrection and the life. I am attaching a poem that reflects what Rose has meant to us, Accept our words of comfort.
Love, Dorothy and Leon
FLOWERS SPEAK by Leon Powrie
FRESH FLOWERS speak of beauty - and the happiness they bring to all mankind,
both young and old, is the happiness of spring.
Richly coloured hues abound in every garden bed
and petals of all shape and size festoon every head.
The morning dew upon their faces sparkles in the light
of the warming rays
of the rising sun and follows with delight
it’s path across the heavens into the darkness of the night.
CRUSHED FLOWERS speak of fragrance that wafts on summer air
and even in adversity has something good to share.
An exhilarating moment, delightfully perceived,
like the pain filled birth of a little child so lovingly conceived.
And yet, again, as life goes on we see that trials come
like storm clouds gathering in the west give splendour to setting sun.
For it isn't the pain, or the trials of life that from day to day we meet that will linger on;
but the memory clear of those fragrant moments sweet.
PRESSED FLOWERS speak of memories gathered year by year;

Those precious moments when joy was shared with loved ones oh so dear.
But now we'll store them in our minds for recall later on;

or bring to air with freshened form in poem, verse or song.
Good thoughts gleaned of a beautiful life, loving, thoughtful, serene;
Of faith and trust in God alone to lead on paths unseen;

A record of a life well spent but fading as a dream."

"From Lynn Boyd, Mozambique - I have many memories of Rose when she snd Herb were here in Mozambique.
The picture that keeps coming back is her instinctive motherly love...demonstrated in so many ways, but most vivedly for me in church one weekend in the ADRA parking lot under the shade of the big mango tree where the congregation gathered at that time.
A young, thumb-sucking Zimbabwean girl, maybe 2 or 3 years old had wandered out in front of the service and was distracting the typically conservative congregation with attention-getting behaviour.  I expected someone was about to get up and severely discipline her, but instead your mom came up and hugged her, picked her up and carried her back to where she had been sitting with Herb.  There she sat down with the girl on her lap and continued to hug and whisper to her.
At that time many thought the girl was slightly slow because she never talked and was often very disruptive---clearly an irritation to many.
I see her every week now.  She is one of the brightest, sweetest young girls you can imagine, vivacious and full of energy.  But whenever I see her I also see Rose.  Such a demonstration of God's love flowing naturally I have rarely seen.
Sending our love--I speak for all of us who knew them here at the Maputo International Church.  Lynn Boyd"

Thank you for sharing all of your nature pictures and family pictures via email over the last several years.  Your nature photos made me take a closer look around here when I went for a walk!  Or when I planted and picked my flowers here at the house.  Thank you for that!
You were an awesome person for God, and you have lived your life SO WELL.  I love that.  Love, Beverly"

"Auntie Rose was such a consistently joyful soul. Her focus was indefatigably on hope, light and delight in the simple things. In her time on this planet, she fed us with homegrown vegetables, brought us music, and wrote letters of love wherever she went. Her strength, courage and faith are an inspiration. I'm praying for my aunts who lost a sis-in-law, my cousins who lost a grandma, and my Uncle Herb, who I know counts himself blessed to have shared his journey with such an amazing soulmate. May you all find comfort and peace as we mourn the loss of a truly godly woman."

"From Gloria Parks What a beautiful tribute to both your mom and dad. Having worked in the same Division in Africa, gave us an instant connect. I asked to be on her family mailing list for letters home while they were in Mozambique. Many times when well laid plans went awry your mom showed she truly have the beautiful spirit of Jesus. I was thinking of all the places she used her "extra" time to teach the women how to make the crepe paper flowers or do whatever task there was that needed doing. Memories of her will linger long not only in the immediate family but in other continents.
While Perry was FAMA president for those 8 years and she the news letter we stayed in touch-we loved her letters.
I grew up in Saskatchewan during the time your grandfather Stickle was the Man- Sask treasurer. So I know some other family members. She will be greatly missed but what a beautiful legacy she leaves. May God's loving arms envelope each one of you. Hugs and prayers. May Jesus come soon."

"Dear Rose and I were young mothers together on a mountainside in North India.  She had so many mothering skills that she shared with me, and was a constant inspiration to me because of the things she could accomplish so quickly and smoothly.  We had such fun with our girls, and baby boys then growing up.  Years and mission service separated us, but I have always valued the years that we were able to spend together.  She has left a legacy for her family and for all who knew her of loving, cheerful service.  We eagerly look forward to the day when separations will be no more."

"From Stephanie Septembre -  Auntie Rose, your love, compassion, and constant smile are very much an inspiration to me. I hope my life will reflect the same kind of joy as yours, and I can't wait to see your smiling face again.

I think my favourite memory of you is my very first one. I don't know if you remember this anymore, but when I was about three or four you came through Abbotsford unexpectedly and stayed the night at our house. Since our house is so small, I had to give up my room, and I was really upset about that. I was mad at both of you for coming and stealing my bed, but you were so patient with me. It was Friday night, and I remember you reading my Sabbath school lesson with me even though I was in a rotten mood. The next morning you left before I got up, but you left behind two one-dollar American bills as a small present. I didn't have any American money, so it was a real novelty. I kept those bills for years and years in my wallet behind my Canadian money, and I would always think of you when I saw them. I finally used them a couple of years ago during my travels. I forget what I spent them on, but I remember that I saved them for something special."

"Shared by Beryl Joe - My friend Rose Stickle, standing beside and singing along and singing with her daughter.
She taught Joe and I a lot on serving the Lord in foreign countries, and I will meet Rose again, SOON.
For now,
Let me be like the dying rose,
Beautiful yet fragile.
Aware of my days numbered,
Yet for the day when I am numbered,
And counted among the living,
Let me blossom with a hand of giving,
A mind of learning,
A heart of forgiving
As I receive from the Root of Jesse,
My well meaning life in Jesus;
Lived to blossom while life shall last here now,
And beyond this life to the bosom of The Life,
Of the Father above.
~Beryl Joe."

"Shared by Bill Both -  Rose was a truly great soul who could have boasted of her accomplishments all day long if she had wanted but chose instead to spend her time making others feel special.
Bill also wrote - To Ann Stickle Edwin Stickle Susan Stickle Woods Barbara Jean Hall Herb Stickle and the rest of the Stickle family,
Rose Stickle was the face of Adventism for a recently separated veteran when he returned to New York. And what better face could there be? It would be hard to imagine anyone who better represented Who Jesus is in places like the Indian sub-continent, Africa and the many other places--including Hempstead, NY--where Rose Stickle was called to be the hands, feet, eyes, ears, the body of her Savior over a lifetime of devoted service. No one better exemplified the love of Jesus in their life than Rose did.
Now she is resting and waiting for her Savior to take her home. I pray that you, her biological family will be comforted in your grief for her and her grandson. God be with you all!"
