Her Life

Early Life of Sarah M. Jones

July 8, 2012

Sarah was one of 13 children born to the Late Elder K.B. Benson & Drusela White Benson.  There were seven boys and six girls, she was the 3rd oldest girl.  Your brothers and sisters are (listed by oldest to youngest) Early B. Benson, James Benson, Moses Benson, Willie B. "Buddy" Benson, Nina Ruth Irwin (Cleveland, Ohio) (deceased), Mary Agnes Brooks (Elba, AL) (deceased), Sarah Jones (Enterprise, AL) (deceased), Mary Starks (Elba, AL) & Martha Snell (Enterprise, AL) (Twins), Flora Marson (Elba, AL), Ruth Nell McNair (Enterprise, AL), Kimmie Benson, Jr. (Atlanta, GA) and Simon Benson (Monroeville, AL).

Sarah and her siblings grew up on Knox Farm, as a sharecropper.  She would later get married and start a family of her own.  She met and married the Late Joe Lee Jones and were united until his death.  Sarah had five children (listed by oldest to youngest)  Phyllis Morton (Huntsville, AL), Peggy Contreras and Cephus Jones (Enterprise, AL), Thelma Fluellen (Columbus,GA) and Gail Amos Prince (Enterprise, AL).   Sarah also raised and cared for three daughters from childhood whom she looked at as her very own:  Betty Sue Jones, Elizabeth Jones Davis (deceased) and Joann Jones.

She was a mother to many others who affectionally called her Moma Sarah", "Mother Jones", "Ms. Sarah" and "Moma".  Everyone who met her or had and contact with her always remember the caring spirit and beautiful smile she gave you.  She never met anyone she was not willing to feed or care for.  If you needed a place to sleep, her door was always open.

She was "Grandmom" to twenty seven grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and as were proud of all of them.  She always encouraged them to always to their best and always do what is right, to be the better person.

While Moma Sarah has put in a "Change of Address", (we too one day will have to do the same)  she will always live and be remembered in our hearts.
