His Life

"I'm Still Here"

August 25, 2015

Seiyei Gibo was born in Waipahu, Hawaii on December 17, 1926.  His parents, Kamekichi and Kamado (Higa) welcomed their middle child to their growing family.  Siblings are Helen (Miyasato), Junichi, Donald, and George.  Seiyei enjoyed football and boxing in his youth and even became an amateur boxer.

As a patriotic American he served in the Army traveling to Japan and Okinawa, where he met his future bride, Toshiko (June) Omi. Lisa was born in 1962 and two years later Joy followed. Seiyei loved being a dad and taught his daughters the value of compassion and kindness for others.  Joy fondly remembers many golf and fishing outings with Seiyei and his bossy dog,Tisha.

Seiyei took pleasure in providing for his family.Family life overseas was peaceful and happy.   He had a long career in the U.S. Civil Service, serving the Army and Air Force; he happily retired in 1989..

Upon retirement Seiyei and June relocated to Hawaii, his homestate, settling in Aiea, where his family was settled.  It was like a family reunion all over again -- Seiyei enjoyed the numerous gatherings for the holidays, birthdays, and new additions to the family.

Seiyei battled Dementia and Parkinson for 18 years being initially cared for by his wife June.  In the final 8 years of his life he was lovingly cared for by the staff at HaleNani Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and Bristol Hospice in Honolulu.  For this we will be forever grateful. When asked how he was doing today, Seiyei, always thinking about others, would say, "I'm still here."

Seiyei had two nieces, Wendy (Yim) and Sandy (Kagawa) and two nephews, Morris and Danny (Miyasato). Seiyei is also survived by Lisa's husband, Wayne (Joe) and Joy's long time partner, Alan (Hirata) and two grand nephews and one niece, Colby, Chad and Dana Kagawa.

Seiyei will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
