Her Life

Her Life in a Snap Shot

December 22, 2013

Born on April 28, 1934 in Los Angeles CA, Shirley Ann Hunter began her journey through life.  Shirley was the oldest daughter of Robert Raymond and Anna Louise Roginson and survived a younger brother Bobby. It was from Robert and Louise that Shirley learned the values of family, friends and being responsible. While Robert instilled the values of being kind, honest, accepting oneself as is and how to just be herself, it was Louise who showed Shirley how to be passionate, fun and to love ALL exciting things.  “I would not be the person I am today if I had not had Those two parents.” SAH

Shirley grew up in Seattle Washington and was happy when her family moved back to Los Angeles, Westchester in 1941, as the rain was not her favorite and often interfered with outdoor activities. Shirley loved the outdoors and all living creatures so you can see how the rain put a damper on things.  The family moved to Pasadena in 1949, for her High School years where, “I had a great time in 11th and 12th grade.” SAH

In 1954, after High School, she attended Pasadena City College and then Santa Barbara College.  She loved going to school especially if the subject had anything to do with Humanities but hated taking tests.  So it was no surprise when she quit SBC in 1957. The distraction…a blind date with Robert Hunter. “He was good looking and we had fun together and I was exciting to him and his girl”.  SAH

After a 3 month courtship, they got married on August 27, 1957.  While married, she worked as a Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant and receptionist before the first baby boy Scott arrived in 1957.  Next came Peggy 1959, and Steve 1960.  It was not just Shirley’s ambition to be a movie star, artist, teacher, social worker, dancer but to be a super house wife and mother all of which she accomplished though out her life, well maybe not movie star but definitely a star to many people.

So at 34 yrs old, while raising 3 kids, teaching at St Andrews Presbyterian Church 5 days a week she was accepted as a Jr at California State College Fullerton to finish her BA in 1970 while pregnant with final child Amy, born in 1968.  Her wish was to always have 2 boys and 2 girls and now it came true.  It was very important to her to have a higher education so back to school she went. She received her teaching credential specializing in Elementary Teaching in 1971 from the State of California Board of Education. She joyfully taught kindergarten to 1st grade for over 30 yrs.  She returned to Fullerton State College and received her Masters and furthered her education at UCI and USC.

Some of Shirley’s favorite things to do with her family were camping in Baja, Big Bear, Camp Osceola, Idyllwild, bonfires at the beach and Sunday dinners at Bob’s Big Boy for a hamburger, fries and shake.  She loved the theater, square dancing, tea parties, playing cards, volunteering for varies charities, and throwing parties on Holiday’s and for no reason except to have fun and see people having a good time.  She loved her Son and Daughter-in-laws Mark, Mary and Yolanda with a special place in her heart for her grandchildren Nicolas, Eric, Daniel, Nathan, Dylan, Evan, Hunter, Alexis, Emma and Abby.  And lets not forget her beloved dogs Sophie and Buster, they truly where her second family.

Shirley had many interest especially where children were concerned and always found a way to keep teaching. There were two areas she devoted the majority of her time once she retired in 1999.  She became president of Arthritis Foundation and Practitioner for the Church of Religious Science all of which gave her great satisfaction in helping others.

Shirley was a very loving, kind, spirited lady with an adoring zest for life.  It was a great loss to lose someone so talented, smart and loved by so many.  We will miss you dearly Shirley Ann Hunter, May 28, 1934 – Dec 5, 2013.
