The news of Sister Hilary's death just reached me here in Granada, Spain. What special, wonderful memories my family have of her! We got to know her in the early 1980s while living in Bo, Sierra Leone. My husband, Iain, happens to be back in Sierra Leone right now for the first time since we left in 1983. He will not get these sad news until he's back online.

Serabu was where we took our newborn, when she needed a checkup that was more than her two doctor parents could provide. The memories of sitting with Sister Hilary and the other nuns, chatting about the health situation in the country, the challenges - cultural and otherwise - of teaching local nursing staff, reminiscences of days past when Hilary was operating, still in a habit with surgical gowns on top and no air-conditioning... We later moved to Freetown and have a lovely photo of Sister Hilary on our sofa with our two year of Katrina who is pretending to comb her dollie's hair.

The last time we saw Sister Hilary was again a total delight. Iain and I visited Ireland in 2014 and were overjoyed to manage to track her down in Dublin. What a wonderful visit it was with her in her retirement home!

Sister Hilary, you blessed us beyond measure. We miss you and will see you on the other side!

I heard the news that Sister Dr. Hilary Lyons had passed away, and this filled my heart with great sadness. Sr. Hilary made an enormous contribution in the medical field in Sierra Leone, and Sierra Leoneans will fondly remember her. Sr. Hilary knew the Matturi family well, and on behalf of the Matturi family, I pay this tribute. Sr. Hilary lived the tenets of our Catholic faith, healing and helping suffering humanity, and served as a Faithful Steward of Our Lord. We are an Easter People, and believe in the Resurrection. Sr. Hilary, Rest in Peace in Heaven with the Choirs of Angels, the Saints, and Our Heavenly Father.

Dearest Sister Hilary, You were the best. Dennis and I were Peace Corps Volunteers in Serabu 1967 - 1970.
I worked closely with Sr.Hilary and the other Sisters concentrating on the under five child and expecting mothers. Sr. Hilary was fluent in the Mende language and was respected by all in Serabu and far and wide. Her enthusiasm was endless and she worked tirelessly . She truly walked with God wherever she went, was God's servant, and it was our privilege to have know her. Take our Sr. Hilary Lord and keep her close to you and may she always be a happy spirit in your home. Love and fond memories to you Sister Hilary.

May God grant you eternal rest, Sister Hilary. You helped to save many lives and souls in far away Sierra Leone. You were my birth attendant . May the Heavens be your reward.

I am so saddened by the news of Sr. Hilary's death. Few people have impacted my life as Sr. Hilary did. I was 23, a rural American, naive, recently a licensed nurse and found myself starting my 2 years of Peace Corps experience at Serabu Hospital. My world was turned upside down is a world so different. Sr. Hilary took me under her wing and taught me how good people could be. I felt the Holy Spirit alive for the first time in the group of Holy Rosary nuns working tirelessly there. She was so non-judgemental, honest, funny, and so worldly. The memories flood my mind. My first day at Serabu in 1976, I went to the convent to Sr. Hilary's room and her wardrobe was open. She kicked the door closed after I had seen the alcohol stored inside. She said to me,"That is for medicinal purposes only and laughed."
At that moment I knew that my journey in Sierra Leone and in my life had changed. And it had. She will be remembered as one of the world's finest.

Her Life
January 14, 2020
As announced by Sister Angèle Nkamsi, MSHR, on behalf of the Congregational Secretary of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary, Dublin, Ireland:

Sister Hillary Lyons died peacefully in the early hours of Saturday, 11 January in her community in Temple Road, Dartry, Dublin.

Sr. Hilary was born on 6 February 1924 in Louisburgh, County Mayo, Ireland. She entered the Congregation in Killeshandra, on 2 February 1943 and was professed on 28 August 1945. She read Medicine in National University of Ireland, Dublin and St. Vincent’s Hospital Dublin and qualified in 1952. She also qualified in Public Health from the Institute for Public Health, Antwerp, Belgium in 1974.

In 1953, exactly ten years after Hilary entered the congregation, she set out for Sierra Leone, her first missionary assignment. She served in Bo as a Medical Staff in Dr. Margal’s Private Clinic for a year before being assigned to Serabu Mission Hospital as the Medical Superintendent from 1954 to 1973. In 1974, Hilary was away from her most loved mission land for some study in Belgium; a course on International Health Development.

At the end of the course, Hilary returned to Serabu Mission Hospital and worked in Community Medical Work until 1982 when she was assigned to Bo. For the next twelve years, she worked in the Rural Development Project with the Ministry of Health, for the Government of Sierra Leone.

The year, 1994 to 1995 was a period for Hilary to slow down a little from the great strides and so she served during this year in Freetown Community in the capacity of Housekeeper. Then came 1995 when there was need for a change in mission owing to the disruption of the programs in Sierra Leone by the raging war. This next assignment brought Hilary to the shores of Cameroon where she served in health care for three years in the Holy Family Health Centre, Akum.

Hilary returned to Ireland in 1998 for a year’s sabbatical, after which she was assigned to Donagmede Community from 1999 to 2005. From 2005 to 2007 she worked with the MSHR Communications Committee, Between Ourselves Newsletter, Dalymount, Dublin. In 2006 she was assigned to Rathfarnham Wood Community from where she continued with the communications work. From 2008 to 2010, she engaged in Writing and Speaking Ad-hoc before retiring in Temple Road Community in 2010.

Hilary felt unwell yesterday and went to see the doctor. Returning to her community in Temple Road, she slept for longer periods and at about 2:30 a.m. (Irish time) this morning, God called her HOME. She will be greatly missed by all her community members, her family and friends. She inspired and touched very many lives through her giftedness and missionary endeavors; May God receive her in His Eternal embrace.

The funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
