Her Life & Legacy

January 16, 2016

Sandy was born to Heinrich and Adele Brozis Steiner, June 5,1942, in Camden, NJ. Her ancestry is of German and Lithuanian descendent.

She graduated from Riverside High School, Class of 1960. At a young age, she began her early career as a secretary for the University of Pennsylvania. Later after the birth of her third child, she had a very successful long term career with Princess House winning some of the company's most prestigious sales awards, traveling to France and Hawaii to name just a few. Ironically later in life she went back to work for many years for the University of Pennsylvania, where she began her career during her young life. She worked in economics and student admissions before her retirement at age 67, where she made life long friendships.

When we think of Sandy, how can we not think of or see the goodness of God. In her life, God gave to us so many incredible beautiful gifts: her three children, her seven grandchildren, and her great-granddaughter. Sandy had a beautiful soul and smile. She was a devout Catholic, and raised her children the same. She was the most fun, loving, God fearing woman and mother you would ever what to know. Sandy loved to laugh, and her love for others was far reaching which was a signature to how she lived. She had many friends during her lifetime. She was an only child. Sha was only 31 when she lost her loving mother to an unknown illness. She was heartbroken beyond words. The grief and loss of her mother brought her even closer to God. She read her Bible and said the prayers of the Rosary faithfully. She knew just about every Saint there ever was and would tell her children all about them. She prayed the Novenas more than anyone they ever knew and gave her children St. Ann's oil to cure their ailments.

She loved all animals especially her own. Her daughter told her she one day, she would see all her pets again in heaven. She was so excited to know that! She loved and often spoke of her childhood dog Arno. Later in life, her companion was her dog, Jake and her cat Nemo who you would think where her real children. She even called Jake (a.k.a. Jaker - Snaker) our brother! Her favorite time of the year was spring and summer. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. Christmas everything! Her favorite colors were yellow, blue and pink. Her favorite tree was the Magnolia and the Royal Empress with lavender flowers that her daughter Debby planted for in her yard when her father passed away. Her favorite flower was Red Roses and the smell of Honeysuckle that reminded her of her loving grandmother Nana Brozis. She loved the Victorian, 1940, 1950, and 1960 eras. Although many may not know, but most of the historical homes in Avalon, NJ were hand constructed by her Grandfather Brozis who was a carpenter by trade.

Sandy enjoyed swimming, sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafting, collecting old glassware and antiques. She made gorgeous crafts, custom ornaments, and jewelry. She was an excellent seamstress, and made the cutest Barbie doll clothes and later doggie clothes. Her girls dolls were always the best dressed of all their friends and the talk of the town! People would come to our house to ask her to make clothes for their girls dolls. Her favorite foods included German foods, and anything pork. She loved homemade Jewish Apple Cake (her absolute favorite), Apple pie, and Angle Food cake. She was a member of the Red Hat society for a short period and sported one of the grandest hats of all! Although she herself had no money to spare, she donated anything she possibly could faithfully to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital.

Sandy enjoyed a variety of music and had so many favorite songs some of which included: all Christmas music, Lili Marlene, Edelweiss, Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art and Lucille. She enjoyed watching the sitcom Friends, TCM - Turner Classic Movies, and musicals. Some of her favorite musicals include: The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Music Man, Grease, Mary Poppins and Moulin Rouge. Some of her favorite movies include: Gone With the Wind, Long Hot Summer, The Miracle of the Bells, The Ten Commandments, The Bells of St. Mary's, Lillies of the Field, Splendor in the Grass, Going My Way, Pretty Woman, and It's a Wonderful Life. She had so many favorite movie stars, but Paul Newman "old blue eyes" by far was her all time favorite.

During her entire life, Sandy loved the New Jersey shore. She gave her children so many fond memories of the old Atlantic City Boardwalk which is the famed promenade known for the roaring sea, dozens of shops, amusements, and the Miss America pageant. During her time, it was the greatest and most romantic attraction of the entire Jersey shore. It had the strollers, the rolling chairs which took people from one end of the boardwalk to the other. Some of her favorite stars and people that treaded upon the boards included, Marilyn Monroe, Sandra Dee, Grace Kelly, Frankie Avalon, Bobbie Darin, Jimmy Durante, Fabian, Bobby Rydell, Joe DiMaggio, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Bing Crosby. The Beatles ate the city's world famous subs on it. Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon opened a bowling alley on it. Jayne Mansfield filmed scenes from The Burglar on it, and Dick Clark would often do remote broadcasts of American Bandstand from the Steel Pier. During that era, AC was known far and wide as the “Showplace of the nation.”

She and her mother Adel (GangGang), would take us to the shore sometimes for a day or for a long weekend splurge. We'd stay on the beach from sunrise to sunset searching for shells and enjoying the rolling surf until we were red as rock lobsters and our mother bronzed. We would go grab a Nathan's Famous Footlong Hot Dog for lunch and run back down to our place on the sand to eat. We would often go to Gino's for dinner and take fresh fudge and salt water taffy back to our hotel room. At night we'd sit out on the balcony watching the sights from above. We would walk the entire boardwalk strolling all the shops along the way. She and her mother collected many beautiful dolls. There was a famous doll shop there where our Mom and her mother would take us to for what felt like for hours!

We watched remarkable diving horses perform out on the Steel Pier, glass ornaments being hand blown, fudge and real salt water taffy and confections being made all right before our very eyes. She and her father Henry (Opa), who was President of the famous German Club, took us to many festivals including the annual Octoberfest and the Easter Egg hunt. As you can see Sandy, our Mom, lived a remarkable life. She left us with a legacy of wonderful memories and captured some of these memories in her personal memoirs left behind.

May we all recognize what our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend Sandy has meant to us, done for us, as well as eternal inheritance that was given to her when she accepted the eternal promise of Jesus Christ our Lord and to praise God for His goodness and faithfulness.
