Steve had one son, Steven Andre Hernandez with Rachel Hernandez. He was especially proud of the man Andre had become and loved being a grandfather to Andre's two children, Steven and Jazara.

Steve shared his life with Rita before her death and cared deeply for her children, Frances, Isaac and Nicole. They gave him seven grandchildren, Adrian, Alana, David, Diego, Alexis, Isaiah and Romeo.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Varner.   

It was with great joy that Alfred and Elizabeth Varner welcomed Steven into their family when he was 10 months old. He became a close playmate for his older sister, Laurie. An active little boy, he loved to play outside and go camping. He was surrounded by extended family who adored their "Stevarino". Even as a child, Steve's artistic talent was evident in his drawings. He was great fun to be around and made friends easily.
