His Life

The Father

March 5, 2011

Steve first became a father on August 4, 1986. He was excited for his "Seafair Baby" and in newborn pictures of me, it shows. Dad taught me how to ride a horse, how to stick up for myself, how to "hotrod" on a 4-wheeler, how to drive, and how to earn my way in the world. Most importantly, he taught me by his example how to be passionate about the things I love to do and the people in my life. Dad had a fierce opinion about everything from politics to the deck shoes he insisted on wearing. Indifference was not a word in Steve's vocabulary and his confidence was something I always admired.

Dad has a beautiful son with his second wife, Vanessa, Robert Sandbakken. Tragically, Robert turned four years old the day Dad died.

The Marine

March 5, 2011

Steve served in the United States Marine Corps from September 5th, 1980 to September 4th, 1984 when he was honorably discharged. He attended basic training in San Diego and exited as a Corporal. He successfully attended NCO Leadership School and AMSE Mechanical Engineering courses. He was awarded the Certificate of Commendation, multiple Letters of Appreciation, and named "Marine of the Month". Steve was very proud of his service in the Marines and had recently enrolled in VA benefits when he passed.
