Our beloved Suman Lata Kukreja, age 55, passed away on October 15, 2015 surrounded by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Rakesh Kukreja who is a Professor at VCU’s Pauley Heart Center, two sons, Sumit, Amit and two granddaughters, Kareena (8) and Sonia (6).  She was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Sheela Chaudhry and two brothers, Somnath and Ramesh Pahwa who lived in New Delhi, India.  Suman was born on June 16, 1960 in Rohtak, India where she completed her school and college education.  Being the baby sister of 11 siblings, she truly enjoyed the profound love and affection of her sisters and brothers.  In addition, she has a number of nephews and nieces in India who were very fond of her.  Suman and Rakesh were married on July 5, 1981 in India and together they traveled the world.  They were in Toulouse, France where their sons were born.  In 1984, they moved to Richmond, which became their permanent home.  Truly the woman behind a man, Suman supported the academic and research career of her husband during the last 31 years.  She was a highly dedicated mother to her sons in whom she instilled the values, education and appreciation of their heritage.  Suman was blessed with a charming personality, a beautiful infectious smile, easy demeanor and a great sense of humor which helped her make numerous friends everywhere.  She had a wonderful melodious voice, due to which countless people in the Indian community and many others became admirers of her singing talent.  In particular, her unique devotional songs always touched the hearts of the audience.   Suman will be fondly remembered by her friends, family and the entire Indian community for all these great virtues.  Unfortunately, Suman was diagnosed with the connective tissue disease, Scleroderma at a young age of 35, which progressively deteriorated her health over the years. However, the Almighty had blessed her with strong will power and a positive attitude which helped her fight this disease valiantly.
