Sunny Ofili.....A rare gem gone too soon

August 14, 2014

Our first meeting was at a relative wedding at onicha uku where my dad introduced us as first cousin. He was putting on a pair of jeans and t-shirt with a face cap and when i shook his hands, he told me that he already knew me from facebook and called me by my alias (phantom-x).
I was surprised that he has been following me on facebook without my knowledge. He exchanged numbers with me and asked me to call him anytime. It was after he left that i was told that he used to leave in USA and recently returned to serve his country and state.I was also told that he was the special adviser to the governor on ICT. I rejoiced because my cousin was going to open doors of empowerment for lots of us with the ICT knowledge.
I kept in touch with him and introduced some projects to him and was amazed at his intellegence and expertise in areas i spoke about and he encouraged me to hold on to my dreams.
Some months later, he called me up and told me that he needed me to start designing his campaign materials for online publicity and invited me to his house where i met his wonderful family.  I fell in love with his simplicity and humility and vowed to do anything to make sure this man succeeds in anything he puts his hands on.
He was always outspoken and would listen to you attentively while pressing his fones because he was always online. When he replies you, it would be an intellegent reply with encouraging words. I learnt to be upright and responsible because of the traits he projects. He always told me never to worry that we would do great things together because he knew that greatness runs in our family.
I fought off all his critics on facebook because i knew that many of them don't know him the way most of us do and they were consumed about our dirty politicians but Sunny Ofili was a rare gem with an open door policy that beats my imagination. He was always trusting and friendly even to his rivals who never get tired of writing negative articles about him.
I remember that you told us that you will be travelling to join aunty and the kids abroad but wanted to finalise your projects with the governor. You specifically told me that you will not be around for the chairmanship primaries but i understand why you went because as an upright man, you wanted transperancy and wanted the contestants to win by their popularity on the field not by selection.
On that fateful day, i took a bus from benin to meet him up at issele uku where he told me that he will be but while i was at agbor, a close friend called me about a certain rumour of his accident, i quickly called his phone and was told that it was not available *sobs*........while i was still trying to absorb the shocking news, my bus approached a scene of an accident along ubulu okiti-issele azagba express road and what my eyes beheld will forever haunt me. I quickly ran out of the bus like a mad man and stood freezed till the remains were relocated to issele uku. It was there and then that reality hit me hard to the truth......Sunny Ofili was gone like a comet blazing through the evening skies.......We have lost an institution. Adieu Sunny Ofili.....we loved you but God loves you most and did not want you to soil your good / spotless life with the mud of our wicked world. Rest in peace my mentor....You have fought a good fight! You stood for the truth!...In death, you are still a light to many!!!! Our face of change!! Our beacon of light.........Till we meet again, i remain loyal!!!!!! Your vision and legacy lives on in our heart.
