In Memory of Mom

July 4, 2012

“If we have been pleased with life, we would not be displeased with death, since it comes from the hands of the same Master. (Michelangelo)

Mom always supported and encouraged us to do our best no matter what we were doing.  She was our foundation from which we began!  Her love was unconditional and despite any wrong decisions, she loved us, stood by us and supported us always. The love that shone through her was bountiful. The power in her heart can always be seen as she demonstrated that she lived for us even in her final hours.

The words that come to my mind include: independence, courage, generosity, sensitivity, integrity, and dignity, and indeed the word ‘life’ itself – for few people I have ever known – dedicated her entire life to her children.  She struggled through her final months and hours to provide a home for us before she departed from this world.  Among the other words, which come to mind to describe her character, her uncompromising integrity, honesty, and determination have proven to be among the most important guides for myself in my professional and personal life.

Life forces us all into positions of compromise and presents challenges to our honesty and our integrity, and I observed my mother rose and met those challenges one after the other throughout my life with courage and a toughness and a sense of right and wrong which inspired me to live up to her standards. Her sense of dignity was never so tested nor so well demonstrated as in the final weeks and days of her life.  Even with a body overcome with cancer she still was not asking for painkillers nor support from anyone. I struggle to imagine myself being able to meet death with even 1/10th the dignity that I observed in my mother during her final weeks and which swelled me with pride each minute that I spent with her.

My mother had an extraordinary ability to make each of us feel stronger and more confident in our own identity, giving us our own sense of independence and mental toughness, which, speaking for myself has been such an asset in so many ways in my life, and accepting her death.  She will live in our memories and our hearts forever and I will always be extremely proud to call myself the daughter of Tabijan who inspired me to be who I am today.

I’d like to leave you all with this quote, by Helen Keller. She said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart” If, by the end of her life, my mother ended up touching all of your hearts ----then I ask you, what else can anyone ask for in this world, but to touch people’s hearts.  Thank you, Mom.

Gone but not forgotten. Rest in peace.  My prayers are with You, Dad and Sally. Love always, Eyden
