Wei was an avid soccer player when we were in college. I am sure that was lots of fun for him, especially with some of the memorable games we together won. One of the things I got from him was I needed to control the ball a little better and longer so the tempo of game wasn't neck-breaking. He even showed me a move he'd do to achieve that.

Two years ago, I played my last game in a local adult soccer league with others aged 40 or above. The dehydration triggered gout attacks that forced me to realize this aging body of mine was no longer fit for the sport, and appreciate the reason for activities such as golf, and square dance...or doing nothing at all. Again, we need to control the tempo of our lives here.

I vaguely remember Peter was the name Wei used as early as in a post-graduate English class in 1985 at Fudan taught by Marcia Chen. The origin of the name may be traced back to an even earlier time. I can still recall Marcia vowed to make Peter break his silence and speak English in public as one of her goals of teaching the class.

他们都说你回不来了,我哭喊着到处找你。。。你笑着从楼上下来,默默地紧紧拥着我和龙龙。。。。。。
你昨晚回来看我们了?你是不是不放心我和孩子?伟,我想你。

(where I worked as a software engineer for 6 years from 1992 to 1998). Nohau made in-circuit emulators which are a tool used by engineers to create products that use microcontrollers – tiny computers-on-a-chip. Almost all electronic devices made today use microcontrollers, in fact some cars I am told have over 100 of them.

A Tribute to the Work of Wei Zou at Nohau Corporation (where he worked for several years).
By Chris Boehr, software engineer
Wei Zou (Peter) came to the US to work as a programmer for Hewlett-Packard Corporation, which hired foreign workers and provided them with an H-1 visa, shelter, food, and a little bit of money. When his contract with HP was up, he was hired by Nohau Corporation

June 10, 2013
Everyone at Nohau called him Peter, as that was the name Nils Thorell gave him; Nils was the first programmer to work for Nohau and the founder and chief designer of the software that powered Nohau’s products.

June 10, 2013
Peter was hired to help Nils create a Windows software interface for the company’s original and best-selling product -- the EMUL51 8051 emulator -- and to adapt that interface to several of the company’s new products that were in development. It was a very important job and Peter and Nils did an amazing amount of work in a very short period of time.

June 10, 2013
Peter’s task was to build the Windows interface and port it to all of the company’s products; Nils worked some on the interface as well and on the code that controlled the emulator itself.
In about 1995 or 1996, Peter left Nohau at about the same time that I was asked to build a Windows interface for the product I was working on, the HC11 emulator

(the company’s second best-selling product). I asked the president of the company if he would hire Peter as a consultant to help me with the conversion on a part time basis, since Peter wrote much of the Windows interface code for the 8051. We worked together on nights and weekends and created an excellent interface for the HC11 emulator in about 3 months,

Peter stayed on as a contractor for a short time after that.
I loved working with Peter. We liked and respected each other from the start. He was a delight to work with, an awesome help to me and I couldn’t have done the job without him. He was surely the most brilliant software engineer I have ever worked with, and I have been working for 47 years.

He could find a bug faster than anyone else I have ever known. He was also very inventive and creative at devising solutions to the problems he uncovered. We were a good team and accomplished much. Peter was respected and liked by many of the other engineers.

I live in Southern California, and sometimes Peter would fly down from San Jose to work at my house for the weekend. On other occasions I would fly up to San Jose to meet Peter at the Nohau office for a weekend and sometimes also a few extra evenings. Sometimes we just talked on the phone. Working with Peter was always delightful. At the time I had 2 young children,

and when he was at my house he was always wonderful with them. I knew he would make a good father.
It is impossible to really comprehend the magnitude of Peter’s contribution not only to Nohau but to companies all over the world that purchased and used Nohau’s products to design and build their own products to make life easier, safer and better for the people of the world.

a ridiculously short period of time given the magnitude of the task. The president was so impressed by our work that when Nils Thorell left the company he gave the 8051 emulator software to Peter and me to maintain and expand. It was a magnificent vote of confidence
for us. For the next 2 years Peter and I maintained both products until I left the company in 1998.

June 10, 2013
Tens of thousands of emulators have been sold whose controlling software is very much a product of Peter’s genius.

We will always miss you, Peter. Farewell – your work will live on as a tribute to your genius.

I enjoyed our times together not only at work but also at gym. On May 1, 2013, 5:40pm, when we worked out together on the treadmills, we chatted about how custom paper size should work in the server side. Later on I cc'ed you an email regarding custom size at 6:16pm, but I didn't realize these were the final words between us. Man, we had wonderful times together. I will never forget you.
