Wilma's Life

March 20, 2014

Wilma was born September 14, 1931 in Mt. Vernon Washington to William and Sara Vandenburg. She had 4 sisters and 1 brother. The family moved to Sedro Woolley in 1938.
She married Grady Wyatt December 31, 1947.  They lived in Grandy Lake awhile, then Birdsview. They moved to Bellingham in 1954. They had four children, Judy, Wendy, Willie and Jan.

When they moved to Bellingham it was on Cherry Street. They lived in a little house and then moved to a large old house at the end of the street when it went up for sale.  It was a grand old house with lots of memories.  My Mom was in love with that house. Large enough for all the kids, lots of character, a huge lot so she could have a large vegetable garden  with fruit trees and woods around for the kids to climb the trees and get out of her hair.

Unfortunately the city decided they needed to put in Squalicum Parkway and forced us to move. My Mom didn't just roll over, she raised cane at the City for quite a while to get it stopped but it didn't help.  She never did get over seeing that beautiful old house with the walnut floors and pocket doors torn down. They just don't make them like that anymore.

We then moved from the city life to a farm on the Old Samish Road. By then Judy and Wendy were grown.  None of us except my Dad were crazy about the farm life. It was about 2 miles to the closest bus route and my Mom didn't drive. It didn't keep her from her volunteering, even through rain or snow she would make that trek to the bus stop.  My Dad loved it, he could finally have the Shetland Pony he'd wanted all his life and then a Welsh pony came along later plus 2 cows (we eventually ate the cows, but not the ponies!)

In 1973 our Dad got an itch to move back to town so we moved to Cowgill Street and my Mom was over joyed.  The bus was just down the street! My Dad not so as that meant it was more volunteering for her and away from home!

My folks liked to travel and made a yearly drive to Reno, they even went to Hawaii twice. My Dad enjoyed his woodworking and vegetable gardening and was CRAZY about his grandkids.

Grady and Wilma had 8 grandchildren, Pete, Christian, Patrick, Jackie, Jenny, David, Brian and Danny, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-greatgranchild.

In 1981 my Dad got another itch to move to the country so they bought the old Deming Inn and planned to restore it and open a bed and breakfast. They  did alot of work on the place and about the time it was almost done my Dad was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 1987.  It was very hard for my Mom at first but after she sold the Deming Inn she moved to Orchard Terrace and blossomed. She loved all the people there and was able to volunteer even more and do alot of gardening. The people there loved her too.

She enjoyed going on cruises, I can't count how many she's been on.  She enjoyed going to Benton City to see Judy and her family and would even make a big drive to Oregon by herself to see Wendy and her family. She drove to Seattle to see my family and I up until she was 80.

She loved getting together at her brother Dan's place for all the family gatherings and the beautiful surroundings.  That's why I chose his place for the service.  She wasn't the church going type but she sure lived her life doing service for others. I miss her terribly.
